    2. We heard about the tornados in Oklahoma all the way down here in Houston, we had a few warning in SE Houston but nothing here in the Woodlands, just some nice rain that we have been lacking. Glad to hear that no one had any damage. Looking for information on a deputy sheriff of Bixby, his name was W.E. (WILLIAM EARNEST) PINION some times referred to as OLD BILL PINION. He was b. 1874. I have one article about him, but not much else. Would like to see if anyone has information about his family. Will greatly appreciate it. Next question: does anyone know anything about "JITTNEY" services that ran in the Tulsa area in say 1915 to 1940. We have one copy of a small article written about one that ran from Tulsa to Claremore, but no dates. It was supposedly run by the other side of my family tree the RANKIN's . My grandfathers' name was CHARLES WESLEY RANKIN. Don't have much on his family either. Thanks in advance Peggy Pinion Rook, The Woodlands, TX ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. My 11 year old daughter and 8 year old son were terrified to see a white funnel cloud already on the ground and already whipping debris through the air as it came right at us through a wheat field. My husband stopped the car at an intersection to discuss what to do...try to get back to my folks house where they had a cellar or try to make a run for it in the car. The tension was high...finally my son piped up and said, "Well, turn one way or another you old fool...we're gonna get killed sittin' here!" The usual discipline for calling an elder an "old fool" was lost in our laughter as we set out for my folk's cellar. The tornado, of course, dissapated (as they often do in Oklahoma) and we went about our business soon after the sighting. Still have to chuckle from time to time. --part0_907600274_boundary--

    3. A stormy night is the traditional time for story-telling, so.... As some of you know, I've been collecting information on anyone I can place in Luther Township, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma Territory [1891-1907]. What few know, however, is that this project can be traced back to a friendship forged in pioneer days -- including nights taking shelter from tornados in my Ggrandfather's dugout.... I spent a great deal of time with my Ggrandfather [O.M. COLE] when I was growing up, and learned genealogy through a game he devised. By the time I entered the first grade, I understood that one of my classmates was a second half-cousin, once-removed, while another was a third cousin, once-removed -- and exactly how some others were related by marriage. So that was the beginning of my interest in genealogy, but he also told me stories about folks who were friends and neighbors in the early days. Luther Township was settled by black & white homesteaders in almost equal numbers. It was relatively isolated, and the way my Ggrandfather described those days, "your neighbor's character was a lot more important than the color of his skin." When my mother and I started this project a few years ago, we agreed that there was no point in doing it at all unless it included both black & white pioneers. So I called a descendant of one of my Ggrandfather's neighbors to see what she thought of the project. Probably hadn't seen her more than a couple of times since I moved away from Luther over 30 years ago, so I started out by telling her what I remembered of my Ggrandfather's tales about her family and asking to be corrected. For example: her father was the first lawyer in Luther, not just the first black lawyer. Right. And because he was the only lawyer for some time, he had both black & white clients. She laughed when I got to the story about taking shelter from tornados in my Ggrandfather's dugout -- because she'd heard it many times but didn't realize it had been handed down in our family, too. Maybe that helps explain why the families have been friends for several generations. Anyway, she's retired after teaching in the Luther school system for many years, and my mother is retired after serving as the postmaster there for over 30 years. So if your family lived in Luther in the past 60 years, chances are at least one of these ladies will remember them -- and may even be able to put you in touch with shirttail kin still living there. The catch is that neither of them are on line. That's why I keep asking anyone whose looking for ancestors in the Luther area to write to me. See? It may take a century, but some good can come out of even tornados..... Sharon McAllister 73372.1745@compuserve.com

    3. I found an old note of my grandmothers with a family tree on it and she wrote on it that in her mothers day it was common to name all or one of her childrens middle name as her surname. My Fathers middle name is her maiden surname and My mothers middle name is her mothers maiden surname. My own first daughter has 2 middle names.... one is my maiden surname. Hope that helps. 3. I live in AR now, but as a child I can remember the sirens and taking shelter from the tornado. I was born in Chickasha, but grew up in Stillwater, OK. To this day, when weather gets bad, I don't listen to the news, I get the kids and go to my fathers house. He keeps a look out at the sky and lets us know when to get in a shelter. I hope all of you are safe in OK. The bad weather has not made it here yet! I have really enjoyed reading your responses and questions asked. I have had some help from most of them. Now for the surname-WOODRUFF-I know where my father and his siblings were born, and my grandparents, both sides are buried in the cemetery at Geary, OK. I stlll have aunts and uncles living there, Hinton, and OK City. I am at a loss tho' for my grandfather G.N. Woodruff m. Necie Viola McCoy in Detroit, Red River, TX However, they moved to Hugo, OK where an uncle Spurgen Louis "Bozo" Woodruff was born. I am trying to trace family from both sides that remain in OK./TX. I hope to find someone who knows Necie Viola's Family. Her father was Flem and her mother was Mary Jane both buried in Detroit, TX. I can not find any more info than that. I have asked my dad and his two sisters, they can't remember anything about her family. It has been rather comical in my searches so far. I have met some really neat WOODRUFF cousins through the internet that they did not know were alive. I had also been told Spurgeon was never married, YET, we have a picture now of Spurgeon and his unnamed wife!! I am making plans to come to OK City to do some searching-but I do not know where to go, so directions, if anyone can tell me would be great! My WOODRUFF side is from Samuel WOODRUFF of SC. I have gotten back to the late 1500's with them-of verified information-and suspect I have found three more-yet to be verified. Any help would be great. Jil-a OKIE still at heart kpulley@alpha-net.net

    3. We are just a homey little bunch. I remember the night Stratford got hit. We watched the tornado out of the kitchen window. My dad tried to call town to warn them but the phone lines were already down. We drove in (9 miles) and took a look around later that night. Roofs gone, store fronts knocked in, glass all over main street. That was in 58 or 59, I think. That tornado came in February if I'm not mistaken. (Garvin County) Beth

    2. Lived at Hillsdale when I was in second grade. We had no cellar so Mr. Greene, across the road, invited us to spend the night with him and his family in theirs. After that night mamma swore she would not spend another minute in a storm cellar. We never did. If dad was at home we would get into the old Buick and drive. If dad was at work we would sit out on the porch and watch the action. Never said we were a bright bunch. Praying for you all, John
