    1. [OKROOTS] Cummins, Crowder, Moss Families
    2. Ronald and Betty Bean
    3. I'm trying to find where the Cummins, Crowder, and Moss families originally came from: CUMMINS, Henry Allen, 1856-1911, (Choctaw, or by marriage) CROWDER, Donia, (his first wife, abt. 1881) MOSS, Johnie Lela, (his second wife, abt. 1894) WEST, Cordelia, Cummins (his daughter) The information above came from Ted Byron Hall's Book, "Oklahoma Indian Territory." He lists Henry as being born in Arkansas in 1859 and as a landowner in the Whitefield, Oklahoma area about 1880. He cites Choctaw land permits from Henry to tenant farmers, but the Cummins name does not seem to be on the Dawes roll. Another source lists his birth as 1856 in Illinois, and gives his parent's name as James Cummins and Catherine Booth. Johnie Lela Moss is listed as 1877-1913, born in Arkansas. My connection is through my grandmother, Cordelia Cummins WEST, one of Henry and Johnie's daughters. In addition to the Cummins family tree, I'm studying the history of the Whitefield/Hoyt/Younger's Bend area of Haskell County, OK. I would appreciate any names, information, book referrals, web sites, or family stories about that general area in the 1880's.

    1. [OKROOTS] Frank and Anna Small, John Blair
    2. Looking for any information or stories about Frank (Francis Joseph) Small, who was a barber and had shop at 120 E. 3rd Street in Tulsa until his death in 1933 at the age of 47. His son, Edward Small, continued the barber shop after Frank's death. Frank was married to Anna Cecelia Blair on Sept. 22, 1909. Frank and Anna lived in Tulsa all their lives, Anna dying in 1991 at the age of 99. I am Frank and Anna's grand daughter and grew up in Tulsa myself. I'm looking for family history for my father, Joseph Eugene Small, who is last surviving child of Frank and Anna's 8 children (Clarence, Edward, John, Cecelia Ann, Gene and Kenneth - 2 girls died very young in the 1920's). Anyone out there know any of these folks from the church or the school or the barber shop? Most of the kids went to Central High in Tulsa, having attended Marquette school for earlier grades. I ask also about John Jeremiah Blair, who was the father of Anna. He worked for an oil company in early 1900s in Cleveland and then Tulsa, Okla. Anna attended Holy Family school, then attended Christ the King Catholic Church (formerly called Sacred Heart Church) all thru her life. Anna's brothers were William, John T., Joseph E., Frank E (several of them formed a company that built homes by Woodward Park area and downtown apts. in early Tulsa days; sisters were Mary A., Nora E. and Nellie. Interested in any news, and thanks so much. Nancy Small Cowden

    1. [OKROOTS] Re: [INSPIRATIONS] Your Legacy (14 March Y2K)
    2. Vickie Taylor
    3. Good morning, Jacque, in Tx., sent me a little message about a College Philosophy professor asking his class about the "Legacy" that your grandparents and great grandparents have left behind and what your own "Legacy" might be. I thought I'd send this to the list and maybe it might be an idea that some of you would like to try to preserve a little of your own "Family Legacy". I never had the opportunity to meet my Dad's parents. They were dead and gone long before I was born. Most of my generation missed out on knowing them personally. The one thing we did have was a "stand in" Grandpa. Daddy's oldest brother filled in as best he could for the missing grandparents. I was one of the fortunate ones that lived most of my life just a few miles away from Uncle Lawrence and got the full benefit of his knowledge. One of my cousins came up with the idea several years ago now to give us all and our following generations a piece of our grandparents in the only way possible. At a family reunion, they got "the 12", meaning Daddy's brothers and sisters, together and with the camcorder rolling, asked some questions, such as "What was you favorite memory of your parents?". When all was said and done, Neil made copies for everyone so that all of us can have this little piece of family to view whenever we would like to. We learned things about our grandparents that we may have never known without the tape. Such as if you had done something pretty bad, my Grandmother would gently tap you on the head with her thimble. I understand that she was almost never with out it. (You wouldn't have been without yours either if you were raising 14 kids.) Grandpa's first driving experience, he bought his brother, Sam's car. Sam lived in Kennyfic, Ok., I think that is Bryan Co. Grandpa went to get the car and just got in and drove it back home, to the Holdenville area, Hughes Co. He had never driven before and made the trip alone. To make a long story short, I know almost as much about these grandparents as I do the other set of grandparents who I had with me most of my growing up years. I still feel cheated though by not hearing the sound of a voice nor the smell from the kitchen. But I still have to feel blessed with the fact that my Aunts and Uncles as well as my parents have done their best to keep the "Family Legacy" intact and growing. This was a good one Jacque. Sure make you think about what you leave behind. Vickie Neill Taylor [email protected] Cemeteries of Oklahoma http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/cemetery/cemetery.htm

    1. [OKROOTS] MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES
    2. Subj: [TXBOWIE] ORIGINAL MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES Date: 03/13/2000 7:35:03 AM Central Standard Time From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Hello List Members, Texarkana USA Genealogical Society has in its possession more than 9,000 Original Marriage Certificates for marriages in Bowie County, TX and 2,000 + Originals for Miller County, AR. The majority of them are from about 1889 to 1935. A few older, some more recent. The Miller County are indexed by both Groom and Bride. The Bowie County are indexed by Groom only. Currently, we are working to index these by Bride as well but it will take a while longer. They can be obtained for the low cost of $2.50, a SASE and a short lineage chart showing your relationship to the individuals. If you had relatives who married in either of these counties in this time frame, I will be happy to check for availability of their certificates. If we have them, you will be notified on where to send your information so that it will reach the proper person. Will also notify you if they are not available. We would love to get all of these Certificates placed in the hands of family members as they would be a great addition to your family records. Please feel free to forward this mail to any list to which you subscribe. Thanks, Doris Lindblad [email protected]

    1. [OKROOTS] Marriage of 1892
    2. Renea Burkholder
    3. Please provide any insight as to what/why concerning the following: 1. Marriage announcement in newspaper, Baxter Springs, Cherokee County, KS, Sept, 1892 Married in Camp Logan in front of Milt Drake's tent by Rev Benj. F. Jones - C. Mickle of Cabin Creek, IT to Sadie Webb of Miami Nation. 2. Declaration, Record of Marriage Marriage in Cherokee County, KS in 1892 between Mickle of IT, Cherokee Nation and Webb if IT, Cherokee Nation. As far as known at this time, both parties were white, neither claimed Native American. Did the marriage take place in KS because that was the closest legal place for whites to marry? Was there a Camp Logan in Kansas? Was it located in Cherokee co? Was this a military installation and therefore would have been a place for marriage of whites in IT? I have located Cabin Creek in IT of OK, very near to Miami Nation area of Cherokee Nation. Thanks! 1. [OKROOTS] David Huston VanKirk's Obituary
    2. Recently received some wonderful information from a second cousin. Thought I would place it out on the mail lists in case it matches up to someone else's research. If you are connected to the VanKirk clan, please let me know. I would love to share information. Taken from Mountain View Times, Friday, September 9, 1927. Volume XXX - Number 19. David H. VanKirk Died Last Friday A shadow of gloom was cast over this community last Friday when it was learned that Dvid H. VanKirk, one of our most beloved citizens, had died early that morning at Pampa, Texas, where he had gone for a visit with relatives. The body was brought to Mountain View and the funeral services were held at the High School auditorium Saturday afternoon at three o'clock, where an exceptionally large crowd of friends gathered to pay their last respects to this departed one, whom was loved by old and young. Rev. F.L. Giles, pastor of the local Methodist Church preached the funeral sermon and paid a glowing tribute to the life and character of the deceased. Knight and Knight conducted the funeral, and the body was buried in the Mountain View cemetery. The obituary follows: David Huston VanKirk was born December 23, 1845 in Wayne County, Ohio, and died September 2, 1927, at the age of 81 years, eight months and ten days. He was united in marriage to Harriett Elizabeth Kick in 1868, whose death preceded his about two years. To this union were born seven children, of whom E.K and D.T. Vankirk of Mountain View, and Mrs. Lela Brown of Amarillo, Texas are still living, besides grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Josephine Lawhead of Pampa, Texas, and Howard VanKirk of Portland, Oregon, whom he raised. Two of them were with him when he passed away. At the age of eighteen years he enlisted in Company D., 169th Ohio Volunteers Infantry, in the Civil War. He moved onto a farm near Topeka, Kansas, in 1879, and afterward engaged in the mercantile business in Topeka, coming from there to the Oklahoma Territory at the opening, April 22, 1889. He served two terms in the Territorial legislature of Oklahoma in the years 1897 to 1899 as representative of Kingfisher County. In the year 1922 he came to Mountain View where he engaged in the grain and stock business until the country became more settled, when he became interested in farming and stock raising, and has made his home here since, retiring in the year 1920. One of the streets of Mountain View was named for him. Deceased had been a member of the Methodist Church since boyhood. Cards of Thanks We wish to thank our many friends for their sympathy and aid during the illness, death and burial of our beloved father and grandfather; and also extend our thanks for the beautiful floral offerings.
