I am looking for descendants of a Seals family that moved from Kansas to Oklahoma. My ancestor John Seals, b 1848 IL, stayed in Kansas. I believe his sons, Francis (Frank), Marion and Lewis moved to Oklahoma and married Indian girls. Lewis Seals is found in Payne County, OK married to a Arizona in 1900. A Frank Seals is in Nowata County in the 1910 census. I do not know if these are the same Lewis and Frank. Alexander Seals b 1846 IL, wife Lydia is found in Noble County in 1900. He is the brother of John Seals. These men are the sons of Francis Seals, b 1821 IN. The family was in Edgar County, IL in 1850. John's first child, Nancy Elmira Seals was born in 1867 KS. I'm not sure where they were between the years 1850 and 1867. There are many Seals in Oklahoma. I am looking for descendants to help me with maiden names of spouses. If anyone has Seals who moved south from Kansas and/or MO, please write to me. Lori
I am looking for descendants of Florence ELLIS who married Sam EASLEY 19 March 1911 in Wewoka, OK. Also looking for descendants of Etta ELLIS who married Bud EVTON 13 August 1908 in Wewoka, OK. May have lived in Keokuk Falls in Pottawatomie County. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Frances
This came from another list and I thought it was interesting. Jack Childers in OKC THE SMOCK WEDDING “One of the more unusual customs that came to America was the SMOCK WEDDING. Under English common law if a widow remarried and brought any of her late husband’s property to the marriage, the new husband became liable for any and all the debts of the previous husband. Women owned nothing in their own right, and this included their clothing. So it became the custom for indebted widows to get married in their underwear, or smocks.” “The SMOCK WEDDING was tripple-fold. It was a bankruptcy proceeding; it was a marriage ceremony; it was an investiture because the bride then got a new wardrobe from her new husband”. “In theory the ceremony was held for all to see, on a public highway. But in practice many smock weddings were indoors.” “When Major Moses JOY married Widow Hannah WARD of Newfame, Vermont, in 1789, she was stark naked. She was in a closet, her hand extended through a hole cut in the door. Then she put on a fine set of clothes and emerged from her closet in style, to the general admiration of the assembled” Source: Ancestors and Descendants of LEWIS ROSS FREEMAN with related families By Patty Barthell Myers Penobscot Press 1995. Becky York asked << I'm wondering how would I get ahold of these in Idaho for OK? I'd love to find my York's and Stewart's in these!>> One thing would be to list the names and years in which they might have been in OKlahoma and ask the Historical/Genealogical society Librarian if the they have the directories for those years and if they can send you a photocopy of the information. I think they charge about ten dollars and probably the cost of the copies. Otherwise you're gonna have to come searching! I have found these city directories( not phone books) for other counties, too. It just depends on the libraries collection. Does anyone know if there is any way to find out who early day post masters and mistresses were? I have been told that my grandmother Martha Hufstedler Turnbo was a postmistress at one time, but no one knows where she was postmistress.

Hi Jim, I am descended from the CLARK family that came to I.T. late 1800's. I have an Ada May CLARK b. 1888 in my lineup, but she didn't make it to Oklahoma. My CLARK line migrated from PA, OH, IL, MO, AR, OK. They settled around what is now known as Kingfisher and Logan counties. They were following other CLARK family members when they moved from AR to OK, my family made several trips to IT, and it was about 1915-20 before they eventually decided to stay in Oklahoma. I didn't find any RICH surnames in my line-up, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a connection. My files on the CLARK side need alot of work. I hope this helps a bit, Jo < [email protected] >

it sounds like what you want are 'Polk city directories'. they were published by the Polk Co. and are for most major cities. the library of congress has probably the most complete collection, but I know the Tulsa library has them for Tulsa. go in and ask the reference librarian.

What everyone is describing sounds like what I call a criss cross directory, divided into two parts, one part for addressess, the other part for telephone numbers. I have seen many criss cross directories but don't recall seeing anything in them except names, addresses and telephone numbers. Is that what everyone is calling a city/county directory ?
