Hi List Sorry to send this to the list but Vickie Taylor's email bounced back as unknown - I used the one she sent me on Saturday, Apr 1........ Hi Vickie Hope your hubby is doing better! I got the death certificate for my great aunt Jewell HOPKINS, who is buried there but further searching seems to indicate that her father might also be buried there, since he isn't with his wife in Duncan, OK. I am desperate for information about him - he was William Henry WRIGHT, b. ca 1867/1868 and died unknown. She allowed her uncle to be buried next to her mother (in Duncan), so I'm thinking that her dad had already passed on (1956) and she had already buried him in Holdenville. I visited the Tombstone website and looked at all the cemeteries in Hughes county but Holdenville is the only one with a partial listing. I would be so very grateful when you have a chance to look. If I can at least find his death date, I can send for a certificate. Thanks so much! Julia Conkey Washington State

hi, I have an interesting question. I have a Lafayette William Barnhill and Elmer Bivins from Garvin Cou. OK who signed an affidavit that Theodore F. Barnhill was a resident of Oklahoma ( for a civil war pension). I have Theodore Barnhill , wife Rebecca and son Preston Barnhill ( Lafayette Preston Barnhill) who were in Montague Cou, TX for the 1880 Census. My Wilson family also came from TN, Hawkins County to Montague County after the war. I know they were there in 1900. Then I have the 1880 census from Montague County , TX listing this family. BIVINS, E.G. 49 AL NC GA (is this the Elmer Bivins from above?) M.E. 39 TN TN TN J. A. 23 TN AL TN S.E. 8 TN AL TN Wilson, M. [lab] 20 TN -- -- Wilson, B. 1 TX -- -- Ward, J.C. 45 GA GA GA V. F. 42 GA GA GA Is this just a co-incidence that Barnhills, Bivins and Wilson all ended up/ went through Montague County.? I know a lot of people went to TX after the war, but I dont know that my Barnhills knew my Wilsons before my grandmother Barnhill married Jesse L. R. Wilson. Grandmother Barnhill was born in Indian Territory , OK. I dont recognize the Wilsons in the Bivins household. Reagon Dillard Barnhill, brother to my grandmother Emma Preston Barnhill married a Velma Lou Ward , circa 1960s. Does anyone know these families? Any ideas. Did the Barnhills and Wilsons know each other in TN? thanks Janice Sutherland
Has anyone on the list had an elderly relative refer to the term "Indian Headright's'? What does that exactly mean or where could I find the answer? I have heard it used in that manner and I've also heard it used just as "Headright's" in refereeing to an allotment of land to what I believe is a -- white settler. Any help on clarifying this terminology is appreciated. Thanks, Paula in Oregon

Hi Faryl, Let's do keep in touch. Where exactly are you from....I'm from Mooreland. My sister was born there, as well as my father's entire family. Dad's father JAMES STRAIGHT ELWOOD was born in New York State and left his immediate family in Clay Center Nebraska when he moved to Mooreland to homestead in 1910. I lived there from about 4 (or younger )to 7 years of age. I went to first and second grade at Mooreland School. I saw a site that had a link to the Woodward county cemeteries, but just the names. I noticed a "Cedardale cmetery" as well. At one point, we moved onto the "Pendergrast farm" when I was in 2nd grade. At that time Cedardale had 4 or 5 people (1 family) and two buildings....their home and a tiny building which served as a post office, ice house, general store and service station!!!!! That was 50 years ago! I will be most happy to advise you of a website if I find any information....and would love to talk to you after your summer trip to Oklahoma. I'd be happy to pay you for pictures of the grave stones of James Straight Elwood and Anna Margaret Johnson Elwood. He died December 17, 1952. She died December 16, 1929. Both are buried at Mooreland Cemetery. Could someone tell me if the Mooreland Cemetery, and Curtis Cemetery are transcribed with names of the persons who are buried there. Or does anyone have the list. Several generations of my ELWOOD/CURTIS/STILES/JOHNSON/BROWN family are buried there. Actually if anyone from this family is online with this list, I would love to hear from you. When I need a death record for someone, I do a search for funeral homes in that area, (infospace or bigyellow, etc. ) then I call them to see if they were the ones to have the services for that person. In this day of computers, they can usually tell you in less than 3 minutes whether they did or not. With all the 10-10 phone numbers available now, I have never had a call that costs more than 30 cents. This is cheaper and much faster than a letter! If they handled the person you are searching for, they will send you a funeral record, free. (I like to send a SASE for their convenience.) It has much more info than a death certificate, and even more than an obit, in that some of them have the addresses of the survivors. Jack is right in that when you send away for a death certificate, you do not get your money back if they are unsuccessful. But this has far better results. I have only had one person say she was too busy to help me, and that was a funeral home in Bakersfield, CA. The ones in OK and AR have always been very helpful. Penny Gardner
I have a form to order a death cert from OK. All I have is the year of death (1955). I have an old family group sheet that says she died in "Washington". I suspect that is Washington County, in OK. Or maybe a town in OK. The form asks for the funeral director and some other things I just don't know. Can I get her death cert. with her date of birth, parents and just year of death? Does anyone have access to cemetery records for Washington County, OK to see if she's buried there? I read someplace that OK does not have a state death index. Any assistance appreciated. Lori
Hello list, Yesterday in Hanford, Kings County California was a plane crash with local folks on board. There were 3 dead at the scene and one is in the burn unit with burns over 90% of his body he is 18 years old. One of the passengers was Billie ESTES a young man in his 20's. He was the son of Glen and Karen ESTES, Grandson of Claude ESTES who was raised I believe in the Coalgate Oklahoma area. A lady on the list was going to do a cemetery check for me in the Holdenville Cemetery looking for the graves (and data) of Charles Haskell HOPKINS and his wife, Jewell Marie HOPKINS. I have lost her email address and would appreciate her contacting me. Thank you very much! Julia Conkey Washington State
While it is possible that you could get a copy of the DC with just the name and year, it sure would be chancey, especially when they keep your ten dollars no matter if they find it or not. I have gotten many DCs with just the name, full date and county of death. I usually leave the funeral home space blank because I don't know, so that is no problem there. I would suggest you get a little more information before you send them ten dollars. Jack Childers in OKC
Lori, Do you know of a general area in which she lived? There is also a small town named Washington, OK in McClain county, which is a little southwest of Oklahoma City. The health dept. charges $10.00 for the death certificate, regardless if they find the person or not. If you can give me a genreal area where she lived, I'll try to find an obit in one of the newspapers at the OK Historical Society for you. Jann
Hi folks! My name is Rebecca Kemp and I am trying to find information on my great-grandmother, Mollie Worthington. Mollie was Native American. The family story is that Mollie was 'stolen off the reservation in Oklahoma'. However, in the 1910 Arkansas census, Mollie listed herself as being born in Kansas with both of her parents being born in Kentucky. In the 1880 Kansas Federal census, I find a Worthington family in Miami County with both parents born in Kentucky... and they have a child, Mary, who is days old! Yes! Unfortunately, I cannot find those parents in Miami County in the 1885 Kansas State census. I also can't find my great-grandmother, Mollie, or her husband, William Allen Stubbs, from 1885 to 1910. They aren't in Kansas (where they were born) or Arkansas (where they died). Does anyone have any ideas where I could start looking in Oklahoma, concentrating on the years 1885 to about 1905? Thanks, Rebecca ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
