While Joseph was yet an infant his parents moved to Dallas County, Texas, where he grew to manhood. He was only nineteen years old when the great civil war broke out and he true to his adopted state and southern principales, cast his lot with the confederacy under General Ross of the 6th Texas Calvalry. Brother Taylor was active in service all through the war and was severley wounded three times, but each time he left the hospital before his wounds were healed. The last time when near Atlanta he returned to the field of battle on crutches. It can trully be said that no class of men were braver, truer, or more tender hearted than the confederate soldier, and when the writer meets one 'tis with uncovered head. Brother Taylor was not an exception to the rule. He was honest, brave and true. The same was true of his life in his home. He was a loving father and a dutiful husband, he having been married in 1866 to Miss Annetta Saunders, to which union were born eight children, five of whom survive. It was Thursday, March 25, 1909, that the summons came and he quietly passed away in his home in Cheyenne, Oklahoma surrounded by relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church by Rev. W.W. Robinson assisted by Rev. H.C. Guledge, after which his remains were interred in the Cheyenne cemetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma to await the call of the Resurrection day.
