He passed away near Pampa, Texas at the age of 74. Sam grew up in Durham and after graduating from high school, he pitched for the New York Yankee minor league baseball team for a while. Sam married Don Ella McKee and they moved to Hobbs, New Mexico where he began his career in the ouilfield. Sam later married Reta McCoy and they settled in Reydon, Oklahoma. Sam enjoyed working in the oilfield and his job took him all over the United States including Alaska and California. Sam was actively involved in the community where he had been a member of the Reydon Town Council and also had served as the Mayor. Sam loved watching all types of sports and was an avid Tarheel fan and enjoyed playing golf. Sam loved making people laugh and playing jokes on his friends. Sam was a lovng father grandfather and great grandfather who wil be missed by his family and all those who knew him. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Elwyn Carter, and his special companions, Tipsy and Tabby. He is survived by his 2 daughters, LaDonna Faye Stout and husband, Dean, Elk City, Oklahoma, Gena Morley and husband Ronnie, Clinton, Oklahoma; 1 son, John Hardy, Chattanooga, Tennessee; 10 grandchildren, Kristi McWilliams, Nikki Patterson, Logan, Lexi and Landon Donelson, Maci Morley, Miranda, Morgan, Amber and Johna Hardy, 3 great grandchildren, Christian Canadaa, Chance McWilliams, and Kierra McWilliaams, and a host of other relatives and friends. A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 6:00 pm at the Reydon First Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Alberta Helton and under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Services.
