Surnames: Guernsey, Hondrick, Caffey, Anderson, Innes, Walker Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5YB.2ACE/2595 Message Board Post: Mr. Elmer James Guernsey was born in Warsaw, Illinois, Hancock County, on September 29, 1863, and passed away in the home at Strong City, at 3:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 31, 1946, at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 2 days. He moved with his parents to Garden Grove, Iowa, when a small boy. Later the family moved to LaCrosse, Kansas, where he grew to manhood. It was here he married Lena Hondrick on November 19, 1891. To this union six children were born. Mr. Guernsey participated in the opening of the Cherokee Strip and remained there until 1900, when they moved to their present home in the old Custer Bend community, near Cheyenne, Oklahoma, (now adjacent to Strong City.) On December 4, 1909, death called Mrs. Guernsey to her heavenly home, thus leaving Mr. Guernsey to be both father and mother to the children a task which he did well, as the lives of the children testify. Mr. Guernsey accepted Christ many years ago and he with his wife became a charter member of t! he Custer Bend Baptist Church; this church has since become known as the Strong City Baptist church. His membership was in this church at the time of his death. He is survived by his six children and one sister, four daughters, Mrs. Lee Caffey of Mangum, Oklahoma, Mrs Orran Anderson of Enid, Oklahoma, Mrs.G.E. Innes of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Miss Pauline Guernsey of the home. Two sons, Lowell Guernsey of Strong City, Oklahoma, Curt Guernsey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoam, one sister, Mrs. W.H. Walker of Dighton, Kansas, nine grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends. Burial Strong City cemetery, Strong City, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. (Cheyenne Star, Jan., 9, 1946)
