Smallwood of Hammon was instantly killed last Firday morning September 7, 1931 about 8:30 by a bolt of lightning during a severe electric storm that visisted the town of Hammon early Friday. Another young man, John Horst of Butler was badly burned by the bolt and is not expected to recover, according to information given out by doctors at the Butler hospital where he is being treated. From reliable information, it seems that four ment were at work on the new residence of Gus Eakins, or rather at the building at the time of the storm when the bolt of lighting struck two of the four and unharmed two of the men. It is said that a hole was burned through the hat of young Horst and one sole was knocked off of his shoe, or completely burned up by lightning. A barn south of town of Hammon was destroyed by lightning, an another bolt did considerable damage to another residence in the town. Residents of hammon say that this was the worst electric storm that ever was known there. (Headstone reads Born April 13, 1914 Died September 7, 1931) (Cheyenne Star September 10, 1931)
