He departed this life December 13, 1955, at Cheyenne, at the aage of 79 years, 3 months and fourteen days. He was the son of Hugh Southerland and Catherine Mobley Southerland, both of whom preceded him in death. He came to old Day County in 1899 from the Chickasaw Nation where he had resided for approximately three years. He filed on a claim near Red Star school where he resided until the time of his passing. He came into an untamed land and helped make it a safe home for hundreds of people. He was a gentleman held in esteem by all who kenw him best. Looking back on his life one is reminded of the wedding feast taught by our Lord in Luke 14:7-11. Alex was not sriving for the place of importance in social life, he lived a simple life. Yet he was exalted over many of us by the material belssings of life which so many of us struggle so hard for, and often in the struggle we cast or shove some brother down to a lower state to attain our goal. During his younger life Alex helped build up a Sunday school at Five Star and took an active part in that work. He took life as it came and always tried to help those less fortunate than he. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years. One of the pioneers of Roger Mills County has gone to his reward. Survivors include one brogther, Hugh Southerland, Jr., fiftee3n nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Burial Silent Home Cemetery, Roll, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. Cheyenne Star, Cheyenne, OK
