Mrs. Richardson, wife of Thomas Richardson, a dreey man of that town, filled the coal oil stove with gasoline and upon lighting the same, an explosion of the gasoline resulted. The burning oil was thrown over the lady and little infant child and burns were inflicted which resulted in the death of both in a very short time. A sister-in-law of Mrs. Richardson was badly burned in trying to extinguish the flames. A dance was in progress at Schiller's residence and Russell appeared on the scene, under the influence of liquor, and proceeded to sir up a "roughhouse". When requested by Schiller to leave, Russell assaulted him and pulled a revolver, shooting Schiller in the left thigh. Schiller secured a shotgun and emptied both barrels of the same into Russsell at short range killing him almosst instantly. No arrests have been made at this writing and all who saw the deplorable occurancce are confident that Schiller will be acquitted on the ground of self-defence. Russell was very quarrelsome, especially when under the influence of liquor and had had several serious difficulies prior to this time. He retired from Kerr McGee in 1976 and returned to Allison to farm and ranch. He was a lifeime charter member of the Khiva Shrine. He passed away January 23, 2008 at the age of 97 years, 2 months and 16 days. Luther was raised near Walters, Oklahoma and later helped his parent's farm near Wheeler, Texas, where he met and married Saretha Megee in 1934. In 1944 Luther and Saretha setled southwest of Reydon where he farmed, raised cattle, worked on the conservation dams and ran his cotton stripper for other farmers. Luhew made a profession of faith in Christ and served as a deacon in the First Baptist Church of Reydon. He was known for his kindness and willingness to hlep others. He was a loving and faithful husband, father and grandfather, a loyal brother and friend. Luther was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sissters, his wifwe Saretha in 1958 and son John Alvin in 2005. Surviving by his 1 daughter, Phyllis Crawford and husband, Robert, of Tuttle, Oklahoma; 1 son Travis Pierce and wife, Tamra, of Brackenridge, Texas; 1 sister Lorene Rector, of Mobeetie, Texas; 1 brother, Carl Pierce, of Cheyenne, Oklahoma; 3 sisters-in-law Wanda Bettis, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Cleo Pierce, Cheyennee, Oklahoma, and Myrle Pierce, Sayre, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchilddren, and a host of other relatives and friends. She passed from this life January 22, 2008, at the Newman Memorial hospital, at the age of 85. Oleta attended grade school at Bellview Country School and grduated from Durham High School, Durham, Oklahoma. Oleta then started her nursing career at Newman Memorial Hospital. Oleta was confirmed and baptized at Christ Luheran Church, August 1, 1948. On October 13, 1943 Oleta was united in marriage to Ted Appel at the Old Lutheran parsonage, located souhwest of Shattuck. They established their home on the family homestead southwest of Shattuck, Oklahoma. To this union six daughters were born. Olta spent her life helping Ted with the farming. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, gardening, canning and mosst of all fishing. In the winter time she spent her time cracking pecans from special friends. Oleta was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn R. andd Johnnie J. Focht, husband, Ted Appel, son-in-law, Jerry Cross and grandson, Glen Cross. She is ssurvived by six daughters Barbara Grace and husband, Butch of Shattuck, Oklaahoma, Betty Cross of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Kathy Stevens and husband, Cork, of Shattuck, Oklaahomaa, Nina Tolle, of Shattuck, Oklahoma, Vera Mitchell and husband, Gary, of Shattuck, Oklahoma, Donna Bunch and husband, Brad, of Shattuck, Oklahoma; special friend and companion, Marilyn DePriest, who Oletaa considered as her seventh daughter, ten grandchildren, Karin Bunch, Lisa Kelly, Alicia Dillion, Christy Bates, Travis Stevens, Gavin Stevens, Lori Longhofer, Tammy Tolle, Kimberly Mitchell, and Sarah Mitchell, seven great grandchildren, Taylor Kelly, Sydney Kelly, Ashly Dillion, Colton Dillion, Megan Bates, Austin Bates and Aidan Stevens, one sister-in-law, Gertrude Appel, of Shattuck, Oklahoma, nieces and nephews, many friends and neighbors who alway knew Oleta as Mom and Grandma Appel. Oleta will be forever remembered for her loving and giving spirit. The special memories that each of us hold in our hearts will keep her with us always. The pallbearers were Clayton DePriest, Gary Don DePriesst, J.R. DePriest, Graysson Kellin, John Mitchell, and Ron Crosss. The honorary pallbearers were Brad Bunch, Gary Mitchell, Cork Stevens, Butch Grace, Gavin Stevens, Travis Steverns, David Burch, Jewff Kelly, Jeff Longhofer and Wayne Bates. Inerment was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Shattuck, Oklahoima with soloist Carol Haygood singing "The Lord's Prayer," Oleta's family entrusted the Masaon Funeral Home of Shattuck, Oklahoma wih all of the arrangements. James Morrow was born Oct. 11, 1903 in Roger Mills County and died June 28, 1988 in Denison, TX. He attended school in Hammon and then attended a Wichita, KS, business school. He married Susan J. Trent, Nov. 10, 1922 in Hammon. They established their first home in Wynona, working for the post office. They then came back to Hammon area to farm until 1925. John Heath and Dr. J.M. Gaskin officiating. Interment followed at Highland Cemetery. He went to be with his Lord and Saviour January 8, 2008. Leo was born july 23, 1925, to Jed and Gertie Dowling in Leedey. Leo attended Trail School, Leedey High School and graduated in 1943 from Liberty Center High School in Roger Mills County. He farmed and ranched on the family farm until leaving to serve his country in August 1944 at the age of 19 where he served in the 9th Tank Battalion. Leo fought through the Europeean Campaighn under General George Patton. He was awarded the distinguished Purlpe Heart Medal among other numerous military honors. He returned home January 31, 1946, with an Honorable Discharge. Leo was united in marriage to Juanita Pearl Pickens in the First Baptist Chuch, Leedey, on October 2, 1949. He attended and graduated from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, received a BS degree in Agronomy in 1950. Upon graduation, he taught veteran on-the-farm training for four years. He then pursued a career in soil conservation service in Bartlesville, Freedom, Ardmore, Lindsay, Purcell and Durant. After serving 32 years as a soil ccnservation of Bryan County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Durant. Leo was an active member of several organizations during his lifetime. Some of those included Rotary Club, Woodman of the World, National Asssociation of Retired Federal Employees, Elks Lodge, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Purple Heart, Trench Rats, Cooties and the Forty and Eight. He held many local, district, state and national offices in most of these organizations. He was avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and working with his cattle. He was passionate in his devotion to his country and in promoting American patriotism. Leo was a a leader in the community, placing American flags at many bussiness and other organizations. He spoke and presented flags and flag poles to schools and churches and other organizations in the area. He led many Memorial Day Services at the looal cemetery. Leo spent many years coaching Little League baseball. He realized! one of his dreams of seeing all of his six children attend and graduate from a university. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Juanita, of the home; daughter Sherell A. Mattingly and husband Alan, Sherman, Texas; sons John W. Dowling and wife Jane, of Durant, Jerry L. Dowling of Durant, Roy D. Dowling, of Durant, and Charles L. Dowling of Denison, Texas, Jim D. Dowling and wife Randa, of Calera; grandchildren Mark Mattingly, Minnecola, Florida, Kafen Dowty, Houston, Texas, Susan Mueller-Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Cole Craig and Luke Craig of Durant, Tiffany Proctor, Brooke Harleess, Tammy Dowling, all of Durant, Spencer Dowling, Kaitly Dowling, Denison, Texs, Brooks Dowling, Durant, Britani Dowling, Oklahoma City, Torri Johnston of Durant and Durant, and Alyssa Johnston, of Calera; and 10 great-grandchildren. Leo was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather to all of his family and will be dearly missed by all. Interment was held at Highland Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers were Jay Paul Gumm, James Dunegan, Dickie Welch, John Martin, Mike Patterson, David Kelleerman, Larry Prescott and Nick Noel. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Dick Cissell, Judgre Jo Taylor, Allen Wheeler, Rick Hammel, John Massey and Billy Mickle. Brown's Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
