Author: WandaPurcell13 Surnames: Parker, Davis, Gilliland Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oklahoma.counties.rogermills/8726/mb.ashx Message Board Post: J.M. Parker was born August 18, 1873 at Spurgeon, Indiana and died December 26, 1932 at Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Mr. Parker was married to Miss Ollie Davis on October 10, 1895. Besides the wife he leaves to mourn his going, two daughters, Miss Norma and Mrs. Charles Gilliland and a grandson, five years old. Mr. Parker came to Roger Mills County twenty-eight years ago and homesteaded northwest of Roll, a farm which he owned until the time of his death. He resided in Strong City a few years, being engaged in the oil business. He was appointed jailer and office deputy by Sheriff Hancock and upon the death of Mr. Hancock was named Sheriff of the county on May 26, 1930. In November of that year, Mr. Parker was elected sheriff. As an official he conducted the affairs of the office in such a manner as to meet the approval of the entire citizenship regardless of party affiliations. He was courageous, tireless and conscientious. Early last year he sufffered an attack of pneumonia from which he never fully recovered. However, he conducted the affairs of the office until May when he became bedfast. From then on he directed the affairs of the office from his bed for a time. But, during the last few months the work has been carried on through under sheriff Bradshaw and deputies. This entire force was very loyal to Mr. Parker sparing him every possible cause of worry. A few days prior to his death he had expressed his apppreciation of their faithfulness. Mr. Parker suffered from an enlarged heart and hardening of the arteries. During his long illness, he was cared for by his faithful wife and other members of his family. He was patient and cheerful. He passed away while in a peaceful sleep. The one great eulogy that can be said of John Parker is that he was a good man--a man who always did what he thought was right. He was a devoted husband and father and a loyal and true friend. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon in the Baptist Church, which was crowd to its capacity. Rev. J.H. Bradley delivered the sermon. Deputies of Mr. Parker acted as pallbearers. Burial was made at the Silent Home Cemetery, Roll, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the auspicies of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of which Mr. Parker had long been a member. The entire county grieves with the family in the passing of a worthy citizen. Cheyenne Star, Cheyenne, OK 29-Dec-1932 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Juanita Sanders, both of Fort Smith, were caught near Laverne and returned to Ellis County jail Tuesday night. Reddick was shot with a pistol as he was riding on the running board of the couple's car. He had arrested them on an attempted robbery charge and was taking them back to a filling station for identification. Officers believe the girl did the shooting because Fox was driving and the marshall was riding on the girl's side of the car when the death shot was fired. The couple denied the shooting. They were returned from Laverne and were identified by Will Deady, O.L. McCulloch, W.B. Hinson and Woodrow Hinson. The pair had attempted to rob the McCulloch filing station, after having swapped a 22 caliber rifle for candy privileges and groceries at the fairground tourist camp. On their way out of town, they had stopped at the Thompson filing station to have a flat repaired when they were arrested by Reddick. Officers learned that Fox is wanted at Bartlesville and Garden City, Kansas on robbery charges. He has served terms in prison for car theft and robbery.
