G.E. Vance, bartender in J.S. William's saloon at Sayre, shot and instantly killed Walter Sheehan, and wounded Henry Maddox. The wounds of Maddox, however, were accidently and not serious. It seems that Maddox and Walter Sheehan were fighting. Maddox was making an effort to strike Walter over the head with a pistol, when his brother, Luther Sheehan, walked up and wrenching the weapon from his hand started to the front door of the saloon to throw it out and did throw it out into the street. At this point Vance, who was in no way mixed up in the trouble, fired the contents of a double barrel shotgun into Walter Sheehan's head and face, and turning took a shot at Luther Sheehan who was going towards the dsoor with Maddox's pistol. Maddox, who had his hand about Sheehan's throat or head, lost a finger and received a few shot in the face. Walter Sheehan was a quiet peaceable young married man. Vance and Maddox have been in trouble frequently. We are told that the coroner's inquest was damning. "His students were always first-rate, and his dedication to them was unmatched." said Brian Allison a professor of music at Collin College. "I've known David 30 years, and he never said a bad thing about anybody. He always radiated goodness and such a positive attidue. It's such a shock to all of us, and such a loss." Karen Austin, a McKinney piano teacher, said: "David was a well-respected man and a really fine teacher. One of his greatest assets was listening. He knew how to listen when people talked, and when people played." An Oklahoma native, Mr. Grice held degree in piano performance from Oklahoma City University and SMU, and he did postgraduate work at UNT. He had been teaching piano and performing in solo and chamber music recitals since 1970. In 1986, he was invited to perform and give master classes in China. Bessie also enjoyed her vacation to Oregon wwith her sister Jean, brother-in-law Perry, and sister Mabel. It was on this trip that Besssie and her sister, Mabel, decided it would be a good idea to pick-up unique rocks from the local state park as souveniers to take back to Oklahoma Realizing it was illegal to take these, Beessie and Mabel road through the entire state of Oregon sitting on rocka. Clarice Davis joined the family as a foster child in the early sixties and continued to be part of the family. Bessie enjoyed many activities afer her children had grown. She loved going with Pauline Cates to Elk City where they would sshop the entire day. It was not surprising to their husbands when they would not return home until well after dark. Bessie was also fond of getting together with her sisters to visit and quilt. Every year she looked forward to the William's Family Reunion where she couldd brag about her family. Baptized at an early age, Bessie was an active member of the Leedey First Baptist Church. She spent many years teaching the Children's Training Union class and helpin in the nursery. She was also a member of the Faithful Workers class. She looked forward every Sunday to sitting in her and Raymond's designated pew with Sharon and Wesley Metzier. After Raymond's passing Bessie enjoyed going on trips to Branson and San Antionio with the church. These were memories she never forgot. Besssie's greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great granddaughter. She loved making quilts and crocheting for each of them. She also took great pleasure from babysitting and teaching them how to play Dominoes and Rummy Cube. Her favorite things to do were spoiling them rotten and sending them home.
