He was looking forward to his 85th birthday in just one month. Services will be held Friday August 8, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Msrtin Funeral Home in Elk City. Rev. Milton Gage and Rev. Michael Larson will officiate the services. Interment in the Cheyenne Cemetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. Doyle was born September 4, 1923 at the family farm neear Elmer, Oklahoma to Bessie R. and Forrest Smith. The family moved to a farm near Greenfield, Oklahoma when Doyle was 2 years old and later moved to a farm near Watonga, Oklahoma. In January 1935 he family moved to El Centro, California. He attended grade school and Central Union High there. He startedd selling the Los Angeles Examiner on the street when he was 11 years old. He was awarded a trip to Catalina Island for his high sales. He delivered Western Union telegrams on his bicycle during the time singing telegrams were popular and enjoyed singing Happy Birthday, Anniversary and mesages. He worked for California Pine Box making boxes for shipping vegetables until he was drafted into the Army on February 19, 1943. He worked helping build the Alaska Highway, which was urgently needed at the time. Then he was sent to Europe where he drove a jeep and delivered mail and messages for the Signal Motor Corp. He was very prud of his Country and his service to it. After 3 years in the Army, he returned to El Centro to drive trucks for the Jencks Trucking Co. He returned to Oklahoma in 1947 to attend Ref/Air Conditioner school and 2 years at Southwestern State University in Weatherford. He choose Elk City for his families home and operated his own refrigerat! ion business there and surrounding area. He especially enjoyed helping dairy farmers with their milk tanks. Doyle worked in the Refer Shop at Clinton-Sherman Air Forcfe Base 10 yeards. During this time, he was sent to Torrejon Air Force Base near Madrid, Spain where where his particular job was to maintain air conditioning on radar equipment placed in the Early Warning System. He enjoyeed helping the missionaries while he was there and taking ice cream to an orphanage in El Escorial where they named him "The Ice Cream Man". After returning home, he went to Alaska again. This time to drive the 700 mile oil service road from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, maintainging refrigeration for the camps that took care of the men building the Pipeline. He finished his 40 years of Ref/Air Conditioning work at Fairview School in Elk City and moved with his wife Pauline to the Jencks Family farm after living in Elk City 58 years. Doyle became a Christian and was baptized when he was 17 years and served the Lord teaching boys in Sunday School, RA's and Scouts. He married Pauline Jencks on January 18, 1943 in the Church of the Nazarene in El Centro, California. The couple have worked together for 65 and l/2 years. Their 4 children and spouses are Michael and Beckey Smith and Timothy Smith, all of Cheyenne; Debora and Don Whinery, Sayre; and Rebecca and Terry Downs of Hutchinson, Kansas; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Doyle had 5 brothers, Forrest of Watonga, Bonnie of Modesto, California, Garland of Phoenix, Arizona, Irby of Oakland, California and Paul of Tok, AK and 2 sisters, Nell Richardson of Watonga and Maureen of El Centro, California. Doyle was the last of this immediaate family. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and in-laws and a host of friends. We will all miss this good man. She passed away August 2, 2008 at Altus, Oklahoma at the age of 92 years, 11 months and 20 days. The family lived around Palmer, Texas before migrating to western Oklahoma. Lois and her brothers and sisters atended schools throughout north Texas and western Oklahoma. While in high school at Crawford, Oklahoma she met and married Noel Emil Briggs on December 3, 1932 in Sayre, Oklahoma. They lived at Durham, Cheyenne and Strong City while 5 children, Thomas Edward, Jessie Earl, Patricia Ellen, Ronald Eugene and Roxie Elona were born to this union. Noel died of a heart attack on October 2, 1952. After the children got out of school in the spring of 1953, Lois moved to Durham, Oklahoma to work for the community telephone system. She was the telephone operator until December, 1955. Lois married Vint Henry Thomas on December 6, 1955 in Arnett, Oklahoma. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Canadian, Texas where Vint worked on a ranch. In September of 1956 they moved to Hardesty, Oklahoma. During that time, Lois worked for Bartlett Grocery Store in Hardesty and later as a sales clerk for McDonald's Department Store in Guymon, Oklahoma. Lois and Vint retired and moved to Cheyenne, Oklahoma in 1981 to make their home. Vint preceded her in death in November of 1991. Over the years, Lois served on the board of the Senior Citizen Center and enjoyed quiling at the Center nearly every day. She, also quilted regularly with her friends. She worked a Granny's Quilt House until it closed in 1995. She was an avid seamstress and for years, she made her clohes, Vint's western shirts and most of the clothes for her children. Lois loved the Lord and was always active in her church, Cheyenne First Baptist Church, often teaching Sunday School. She raised her family in a Christian atmosphere and had loving Christian husbands. She was fortunate to see all her children accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour. She wa preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, 2 Sons, Thomas Edward Briggs and Jessie Earl Briggs; four brothers, Odis Riley, Dee Riley, W.J. Riley, Tom Riley; five sisters, Baby Riley, Ruth Cole, Ruby Riley, Alta Reed, Hazel Malson; and 1 half sister, Georgia Bee Kirby; and one grandsson, Gary Briggs. She is survived by her Daughters, Patsy (Briggs) Collins, Durham, Oklahoma; Roxie (Briggs) Hensley and husband Quinlin, Altus, Oklahoma; Son, Ronald Briggs and wife, Joy, Ulysses, Kansas; Step-Daughters, Peggy (Thomas) King, Edmond, Oklahomsa; Lois (Thomas) Harris and husband Bob, Midwest City, Oklahoma; Step-son, Joe Henry Thomas, Reydon, Oklahoma; 1 sister, Gerri Saiz, Cheyenne, Oklahoma; 10 Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services were held Wednesday, August 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Cheyenne First Baptist Church officiated by Boyd Whitehead and Jeff Hurlbut. Burial was at Strong City Cemetery, Strong City, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service, Cheyenne, Oklahoma. He passed away July 29, 2008 near Kelton, Texas at the age of 46 years, 3 months and 27 days. Stan gre up in Cheyenne where he attended school, graduating from Cheyenne High school in 1980. He was married to Rachel Marin at his parent's house in Cheyenne on September 10, 1983. They lived in Cheyenne before moving to Sayre. They returned to Cheyenne in 1991 to make their home. Stan made his career in the oilfield. He began working as a Roughneck in high school and worked his way up to his current position as a Tool Pusher. He was a hard worker and he died doing whaat he loved. Stan's greatest love was his family and he especially enjoyed spending time with his sons. He was preceded in death by his father. Verna Marie Ommen Davis was born August 4, 1916 to Heniz and Marie (Trost) Ommen in Custer County between Butler and Leedey, Oklahoma and she passed away early Sunday morning, July 20, 2008 in the Integris Clinton Regional Hospital. Verna was raised in the Butler-Leedey area and attended school at Solid Rock. She married Waverly Davis September 23, 1933 in Butler. They purchased a farm near Butler in 1940 and they raised Cattle, wheat and cotton. She workeed side by side with her husband on the farm as well as caring for their five children. The Davis's moved to Clinton in 1969 and Mr. Davis continued to farm the land in Butler. After 70 years of marriage Mr. Davis preceded her in death in December 2003. She was also preceded in death by a son, Loraine Eugene Davis, a grandson, Alan Davis and a sister, Gladys Kauk and four Brothers, Oscar Ommen; Elmer Ommen; Theodore "Ted" Ommen and Herbert "Happy" Ommen. She wass faithful and active member of the First Baptist Church, she loved to travel abroad with her husband, she enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading and the passion of her life were her children and grandchildren. She is survived by two sons Dale Davis and his wife, Joan, Nacogdoches, Texas; Ronald Davis and his wife, Mona, Denon, TX, and two daughters, Patricia Kelley and husband Jack, Clinton and Sylvia Conant and husband, Michael and a daughter-in-law Mary Inez Davis-Cornelius, Midwest City. She courageously battled cancer for over eighteen years. She was born on December 6, 1946 to Fred and Della Schmidt of Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Regina graduated from Crawford, Oklahoma High School. After two years at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, she received her certificate in Cosmetology. On April 27, 1968 she married Ervin Penner. To this union two children were born. In December of 1979 they moved to El Reno, Oklahoma. She was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. She extended her friendship to all she met. Regina organized the "Red Hats of the Prairie and was the Queen Bee until just a short time ago. She especially enjoyed all of her activities with them. Regina's parents, Fred and Della Schmidt of Cheyenne and her brother, Ronald Schmidt of Hydro, Oklahoma preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Ervin Penner and granddaughter, Shelbby Warren of the home; a son, Michael Penner and wife, Annie of Yukon, Oklahoma; a daughter, Jeanna Nodal and husband, Danny and their children, Jessica, Isabelle and Colon of Elk City, Oklahoma; a sister, Aleta Lohberger of Elk City. She is also survived by her adopted family, Robert and Deiddre Albreck and their children, Abigail and Clay of Washington, Oklahoma as well as many brothers and sister-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends. Private burial was in Lane Memorial Cemetery in Sunray, Texas by Morrison Funeral Home. Howard Hinton was born September 4, 1929, in Indianola, Oklahoma, to Ivan and Myrtle Hinton. Ivan Hinton worked on the Wickham Ranch and during this time his children attended the Strong City school. They moved from Oklahoma to Sunray in 1942. He attended Sunray High School where he was a member of the school's first football team. Howard married Caroline Worst of Sunray and they recently celebrated their 59th anniversary. He was a former resident of Gruver, Texas where he farmed. He was the first meeter prover with Diamond Shamrock, in 1995; he retired as superindent of pipelines and terminals after a 41-year career. Howard loved to fish, hunt, work on "his place." work with children at church and backpack with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 1009, where he served as Deputy Grand Master, and was deacon of First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Viola Richardson, in 2007. Survivors include his wife, Caroline, three daughters, Stephanie Petersen of Grass Valley, California; Staria Myers and husband Cody of Amarillo, Texas and Shelley Breedy and husband Kyle of Flower Mound, Texs, a son, John Hinton and wife, Karen of Weatherford, Texas, seven grandchildren and one sister Ellen June Howards of Deer Park and countless other relatives and friends. He grew up and graduated from school there. He married Ida Hagerman, daughter of Charles and Naomi Hagerman of Sweetwater, Oklahoma May 22, 1978 in Elk City, Oklahoma. He was a member of Christian Life Assembly of God. Fred had been the pastor of churches in Pecos, Fairfield, and Associate Pastor in Fort Stockton. Survivors include his wife, Ida; son, Sgt. Fred Fleener, IV, stationed in Germany; a daughter, Whitney Faith Fleener of Lubbock. Also surviving are his mother, Hazel Chery of Winters; a sister, Mary Jane Duffy of Odessda; and one brother, Jimmy Fleener of Rush Springs, Oklahoma; along with numerous nieces aand nephews. She was raised in Western Oklahoma and moved to Hugo in 1946. She was married to Albert Madden on October 12, 1949 at Paris, Texas and they made home in Hugo. Mr. Madden preceded her in death in 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter and 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors include her sister: Helen Moore and husband Theodore of Sayre, two sisters-in-law, Florella Bashaw of Elk City and Dorothy Basshaw of Pampa, Texas and many nieces and nephews. They made their home in and around Reydon where they raised their 3 sons. Pauline worked for the United States Postal Service and was the Postmaster at Reydon when she retired in 1990. Pauline loved her family and was active in the community. She was a member of the Reydon First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, 1 son, Michael Dewayne McNeil, 1 Great Granddaughter, Charis Marie McNeil, 1 Sister, Thelma Lancaster and 1 brother, Bernie Habeck. It is not real difficult IF the land deed is in the Roger Mills County Court House at the County Clerk's office. The land will be listed as described with section, township and range numbers and you look it up on today's county map and we can plot it for you on a copy of our county map and send to you.... If the land owner was the first one to claim the land, there is more info... We are on vacation at the moment but will return August 5. Would you write to me again at that time and I will be glad to look up the claim at our court house. Lindley, 75, of Memphis, TX will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Alberta Helton, officiating and Scotty Lindley, assisting. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, Texas. Mr. Lindley passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at his home in Memphis, Texas. J.W. was born April 6, 1933 in Plaska, TX to the late Mr. John W. Lindley and Mrs. Willie (Wallace) Lindley. He was a 1952 graduate of Lakeview High School. He married Darlene Hartley on April 30, 1967 in the Church of Christ in Bovina, TX. J.W. grew up farming on the family farm in Plaska. He raised, fit and showed registered Hereford cattle and has been a horse trainer for 35 years. He was also a lifetime member of American Quarter Horse Association and National Cutting Horse Association. He served as past director of Panhandle Cutting Horse Association wheree he has won the national title three times. He was also a member of the Church of Christ in Lakeview, TX. He was preceded in death by one son, Jay Preston Lindley on August 8, 1971 and one brother, Dalton Lindley. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Lindley of Memphis, TX; two daughters, Jay Sweatt and husband Greg of Cochise, AZ; Chlo Brodecko and husband Kenny of Wheeler, TX; one son, Scott Lindley and wife Summer of Madisonville, TX; six grandchildren, Preston Sweatt of Cochise, AZ; Madalyn Brdecko of Wheeler, TX; Kattie Sweatt of Cochise, Az; Morgan Brdecko of Wheeler, TX; Sarah and Riley Lindley both of Madisonville, TX; one brother, Thollie Lindley and wife Patti of Lakeview, TX; one sister, Nancy Montgomery and husband Lacy of Memphis, TX. The family suggests memorials to the Westview Boys' Home, P.O. Box 553, Hollis, OK 73550. Veryl served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Portland Avenue Baptist Church. He retired as a Food Brokerage Salesman. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Earnest; and sisters Nova Lee Johnson, Joy Cropp and Mona Steele. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret; sons Gary Hammons and wife Tammie, Doug Hammons; and grandson Russell. Services were held Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Portland Avenue Baptist Church with Tony Mullican officiating. Interment followed at the Greenlawn Cemetery, Checotah, Oklahoma. Cox, Resident of this city since 1892, died at home of son in New Mexico. "Old Age" cause of death: Was over 70 years of Age. Burial Place Here Mrs. H.D. Cox, (Delphia) a resident of this city since the Cheyenne and Arapaho Coutnry was opened to settlement, died in New Mexico at the home of her son, recently, as a result of old age. She was buried in the Cheyenne Cemetery on Frida. Bro. Gilliam, pastor of the Methodist Church conducted the funeral ceremony. When the news reached this place of her death her many friends here were saddened She was omnipresent in the affections of her fellow townsmen, because of her devoted Christian life--one that was sacrificing. She helped make lighter many of the burdens of pioneer life. When doctors were few she was oft at the bedside of the sick and the dying. To children survie her death. They are Mrs. Jennie Berry and Mr. Don Cox. They were present at her burial. The Star extends condolation to the bereaves oned. He had been confined to his room for two weeks. Hez D. Cox was born in Illinois, October 15, 1843. Married Miss Delphia Phillips, August 19, 1860. To this union were born six children, two of which are now living, Don J. and Jennie. There are eight grandchilddren and one great grandchild. The two grandchildren, Mrs. L.L. Ingrem of Amarillo, Texas and Mrs. Gussie Reifschneider of Jacksonville, Fla. were at his bedside. Mr. Cox has been a main support in Cheyenne for years, and there have been few men, who have donated as liberally to the advancemen of the citizenship of our city and county than Mr. Cox. The citizenship of this county and town will miss the good advice and financial aid he has given us. He was noble minded, candid in his demeanor and hospitable. Mr. Cox was a member of the Baptist Church of this city, uniting with the church at this place in 1902. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at 3 o'clock p.m. Rev Wileman conducting the services. Interment was made at the Cheyenne Cemetery at six o'clock under the hospices of the Odd Fellow Lodge of which he was a member. The Sentinel with the host of his friends in western Oklahoma extend sympathy to the bereft relatives. Cunningham, one of the pioneers of the Cheyenne and Arapaho country, coming to Roger Mills county in 1892, passed away last Monday afternoon in a Sayre hospital, after an illness of only a few days. Mr. Cunningham's passsing marks the going of one of the real pioneers of the county. He homessteaded a farm northeast of Cheyenne and reared to manhood and womanhood a family that has played an important part in the development of the county. The mother preceded him in death four years ago. Mr. Cunningham became ill last Friday morning and was taken to the Sayre hospital that afternoon where an operation was performed. He became worse Sunday and passed away Monday afternoon. All of the children were preseent except Mrs. Mavis Kaiser of Springfield who had just recently visited her father in Cheyenne. James FelixCunningham was born in Galston (Gaston or Gadsden), Alabama, April 16, 1850, and departed this life August 4, 1930, age 80 years, 3 months and 18 days. When 19 he moved to Henderson County, Texas where he had typhoid fever, the only illness he had ever suffered until the lasst one which was but a few days in duration. In 1873 he was married to Mrs. Mary M. Cauble in Hill County, Texas and to this union elevewn childdren were born, eight of whom survive. He also assisted in the rearing of two step-children. They are Mrs. John Cross of near Cheyenne; Mr. S.H. Rimbey of Cheyenne; Kenneth Cunningham of near Cheyenne; Jesse Cunningham, rural mail carrier of Cheyenne; Judson Cunningham, court clerk of Roger Mills County; Ray Cunningham of near Cheyenne; Bertie McKinney of Elk City and Mavis Kaiser of Colorado. Mr. Cunningham had 20 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great great granchild, Patricia Louise Rolley of Albuquerque, N.M. Mr. Cunningham was a veteran of the Civil War. He had three sons and six grandsons to serve during the great World War. When 32 yeaars of age he was baptized into the Missionaary Baptis church in which faith he believed always. In an early day he preached. During the recent revival he attended every meeting seeming at that time to be happy, well and joyful. He had been a Mason for 55 years being a charter member of the local lodge. (A founding Member of the Lodge in Hood County Texas) The large crowd present a the funeral services Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist church was a testimony of the esteem in which the pioneer and his family hold in the community. To J.F. Cunningham goes the distinction of planting the first cotton ever grown in Cheyenne. Services were coneducted by Rewv. Shirley of Elk City assisted by Rev. Rhoads of Cheyenne. The funeral rites were in charge of the local Masonic Lodgre which was assisted by meembers of that fraternity of Strong City. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot, beneath as mound of flowers in the Cheyenne Cemeetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills County Oklahoma.
