Strephens crossed over the boundary that divides this life from the unknown beyond. Grandma, as she was called by her many friends, was born in Kentucky on the 25th of December 1829. Her husband died, soon after the close of the Civil War, leaving a family of seven children dependent upon her. One son died in his young manhood and only four of her six living children were here to go with her to her last resting place. One daughter living in St. Louis and another in Memphis were too far away to get here to see for the last time their cherish mother. After leaving Kentucky she resided a number of years near Mobeetie, Texas but the last twelve years of life were spent with her son, E.F. Stephens in Cheyennee and no mother ever had a more devoted and loyal son than he; he was the staff of her declining years and made her home restfully content. Grandma had been a consistent member of the Methodisat Church, South for a number of year! s and her greatest delight was in attending church service. She was an invalid for several years before her death but not confined to bed at the time, and we love to think of her as we so often saw her sitting with her open Bible, on her lap reading with pleasure and trusting so faithfully the precious promises of the Father she dselighted to serve. Like the Patriarchs of old, her faith never waivered and end was peace --A Friend. Cheyenne Sunbeam, Cheyenne, OK Maay-1906

Mildred held a deep interest in the 4-H program and was active at both the local and county levels during her school years. As their own sons began their schooling, both she and Dennie continued as sponsors in the program as long as their four sons attended school. She joined the Trail Home Demostration Club in 1926 and actively helped the Club at local and county fairs. She frequently entered exhibits of her own including flower arrangements, baked goods and craft articles. Mildred remained an active member of this organization for 60 years until club disbanded. Mildred's hobbies were caring for her family, gardening, growing and arranging flowers, candle making, baking and decorating cakes for the important events in her family and friends lives, piecing quilts and crocketing. As a founding member of the Dewey County Historical Society she wrote many of the articles included in the first edition of "Spanning the River" - Dewey Counties first compiledd record of founding family histories, she submitted articles on the town of Leedey and the Leedey First United Methodist Church and furnished a number of pictures that were used in the book. Mildred was also a founding member of the Leedey Senior Citizens Center and enjoyed all the meetings and projects that organization had undertaken. In 1996, Mildred was honored by the Dewey County Historical Society as Leedey's inductee into the "Dewey County Hall of Fame" an honor of which she was both justifiably proud and most deserving. This beloved member of our community passed into her Heavenly home on April 4th, 2006 while being comforted in the final illness at the Elk City Regional Hospital. She was met by loving family and friends of this life that preceded her in death including her beloved husband, Dennie; two brothers, Robert and Porter Twyman; two sisters, Margaret White and Evelyn Graybill; and one daughter-in-law, Dortha. She is survived by her four sons; Bob and wife, Betty, of Clinton; Eddie and his wife, Lola of Clinton; Don and his wife, Sarah, of Urbana, Illinois, and Charles, of the home of Leedey.
