He was born September 7, 1849, in Tennessee and died at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 23 days. He has made his home here for some time with his son. "Uncle Alex" Alexander who preceded him in death several months ago. Interment was made in the Erick cemetery, Erick, Beckham County, Oklahoma with Fatheree Funeral Home in charge. Over 40 carraiges and wagons followed the remains to the last resting place at the Berlin cemetery. He leaves a wife and 6 children to mourn his departure. Mr. Alexander settled here 5 years ago from Missouri on the old Downing place where he has resided ever since. Sayre Headlight, Sayre, OK 14-Apr-1911 William R. Alexander died at his home near Grimes, Friday, April 7, 1911 at 2 o'clock p.m., after a sickness of eight days, of pneumonia. The funeral services were held at the school house in Berlin, conducted by the pastor of the Methodist Church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Berlin cemetery, Berlin, Roger Mills CFounty, Oklahoma. At the grave the Odd Fellows took charg, he having been a member of that order in Berlin. The deceased was born May 4, 1850, in Alabama, so would have neen 61 years of age next month. He moved from south Missouri to Oklahoma about five years ago and had made a large acquaintance. A very large crowd of friends and neighbors attended the funeral, showing the great respect in which he was held. He was a good man. He leaves a wife and eleven children, six children being with hime at the time of his death. They have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. (Note the difference in name William H. & William R.) Alexander, a farmer who was about 65 years of age, committed suicicde by taking carbolic acid at his home near Sweetwater last Tuesday, after returning from Erick where he haed been on business. Mr. Alexander bought the George Feiland farm last winter and palnted a crop this spring. Every thing seemed to go dead wrong for him- his crop was short and his financial affairs got into a tangle and he grew despondent after brooding over business matters and at last he decided to end his troubles. On his way home from town he remarked that he only intended to use abou six feet of that land, but nothing was thought about the remark until he had taken the poison. Mr. Alexander was well liked by his neighbors and no other cause can be attributed for his taking of his own life. He leaves a large family to mourn his death. Burial will be in the Silent Home Cemetery, Roll, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service of Cheyenne. Sam was born July 1, 1934, in Reydon. He attended school in Crawford, later moving to Cheyenne. He was in military service from 1957 to 1959. He was preceded in death by his mother and four brothers. He is survived by: his father, Rufus W. Allen of Cheyenne; two brothers, Jack of Crawford, and Clovis of Liberal, Kansas; four sisters Meadow Bell Smith, of Roswell, New Mexico; Ellen Daniels, Tinnie Campbell, and Jimmie Lou Wilmoth, all of Cheyenne. Sam Allen was born on July 1, 1934 near Reydon, Oklahoma to Rufus W. and Jennie B. Allen. He passed away on August 20, 1984, at the age of 50, one month and 20 days after an extended illness. Sam attended school and grew up in the Crawford Community, where he helped his parents farm, until going into the Armed Service, where he served in Germany for two years. Sam will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, and three brothers. He is survived by his father, Rufus W. Allen of Cheyenne, two brothers, Jack I. Allen of Crawford, Clovis W. Allen of Liberal, Kansas; four sisters, Medow Bell Smith of Roswell, New Mexico; Tennie Dale Campbell, Ellen Daniels and Jimmie Lou Willmouth all of Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Orvel Laundrum Albright was born January 13, 1911 to Charles and Lillie Albright in Leedey and passed away in his home early Sunday morning following a long illness. Orvel was reared in the Leedey area and farmed for a short time in that area and then moved to California and started a refrigeration business in 1937. He then moved to Clinton in 1963 where he owned and operated the Albright Refrigeration Service until his retirement in 1980. He married Margaret (Hart) Albright at Sayre, Oklahoma in 1959. He was a member of the Church of the First Born. He is survived by his wife, Margaret of the home; two daughters, Lillian Albright Raker, Modesto, California, Mrs. Tom (Catherine M. Albright) Michael, Byron, California; one step-son, Larry Rhodes, Bessie, Oklahoma; three sisters, Eudella Butler, Houston, Texas, Juanita Bonn, Glendale, Arizona, Naomi Graybill, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one brother, Ted Albright, Cottonwood, California; two grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren; 6 step great-grandchildren. U.A. Albin, 89-year-old western Oklahoma pioneer and former Sayre newspaperman, succumbed Tuesday January 3, 1939 after a protracted illness. An early day printer, Mr. Albin was employed by the Sayre Headlight when that paper was owned and edited by the late Charles J. Seely, popular western Oklahoma newspaperman. Mr. Albin established The Altruist, a newspaper, in Erick in 1902, and was well known by oldtimers here and in other sections of western Oklahoma. After retiring from the newspaper business, Mr. Albin served as justice of peace in Roger Mills county for a number of years. Funeral services for the early day county resident will be held at 1:30 Thursday afternoon from the Meridian Community Building with Reverend Briggs of Bulo, officiating. He was living on his farm in that community when he succembed at 2:30 Tuesday morning. Survivors include five sons, R.O. Albin of Wichita, Kansas, W.C. Albin and G.M. Albin of Sweetwater, Harry Albin of Spring Lake, Texas; and George Albin of Reydon; and four daughters, Mrs. Lillie Maxwell of Hartford, Kansas, Mrs. Lulu Burge of Ponca City, Mrs. Minnie Hodge and Mrs Eva Guyer of Sweetwater. He was converted at an early age and received the baptism at an Amarillo camp meeting in 1930, and later joined the Assembly of God church at Sweetwater, Oklahoma. He died Sunday, April 29, 1990 in the Sayre Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Walter moved with his parents to the farm east of Roll in 1906 where he grew up. On December 20, 1927 he was married to Arvor Viola Butler in Sayre. They lived in Oregon for a short timed before returning to Crawford to make their home. Arvor died in 1955. On February 123, 1960 Walter and Ella Sides Collins were married in Durham and remained in the Crawford community where they farmed. Ella preceded him in death in 1981. He had been a member of the Crawfordd Church of Christ for a number of years. In addition to both his wives, those preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters and one brother. Survivors include one daughter, Nan Evans of Elk City; one son, Frank Collins of Durham; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, 1990 at 2 p.m. in the Crawford Church of Christ with Earl Reed officiating. (Uncle Billy) Adams, 72 years old, Roger Mills county commissioner, died last midnight in a Clinton hospital following a bried illness with pneumonia and influenza. Death was attributed to pneumonia and a kidney disorder. He was the second Roger Mills county official to die within the past week. Rites were held Tuesday for John M. Parker, sheriff, who died Monday at Cheyenne. Rites at 2 Saturday Funeral services for Mr. Adams will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Red Star Church and cemetery, eight miles south of Leedey. Masonic rites will be held at the cemetery. Rev. J.H. Bradley, pastor of the First Baptist church at Cheyenne, will officiate at the church services. T.C. Moore, first Roger Mills county superintendent; District Judge F.L. Mitchell, of Clinton, and Professor Moss, Lawton, one of the early day superintendents of the Cheyenne schools, will speak briefly at the rites, it was announced today. Efforts were being made to get in touch with Mr. Moss to have him attend the funeral. The three men all were close friends of the official. Uncle Billy, as he was known to his friends, was one of the most widely known men in Roger Mills county. He was an early pioneer of the country. He was an early pioneer of the county and served for many years as county superintendent. He had retired from public life when he was appointed to fill out the unexpired tem of the late W.R. Trent, Hammon, as county commissioner. Mr. Adams waited until late in life to marry, his wedding occured seven years ago. Mr. Adams moved to what is now Roger Mills County, then old Day county, with his father, Billy Adams, Sr., from Johnson county, Texas, in 1900. The elder Mr. Adams led a band of 10 immigrants in covered wagons from Texas to northeastern Roger Mills county and settled on Quartermaster creek southwest of the town of Leedey. Uncle Billy Adams became widely known to Roger Mills county folk was an active figure in politics. Fanny L. Adams passed from this life at the home of her son, W.A. Adams in Cheyenne at the ripe old age of eighty-one years. Grandma Adams came to Roger Mills County in early day with her husband, Uncle Dick Adams, and family and settled on a homestead on Quartermaster, near old Texmo. Uncle Dick preceded her from this world some fifteen years ago. After his death Grandma continued to live on the farm with her son, W.A. Adams until about three years ago when they moved to Cheyenne. Her friends in that part of the county were numerous as all knew and loved Grandma. While living in Cheyenne the feebleness of Grandma which crept on with age prevented her from forming a wide acquaintance but in the part of town which was her home Grandma numbered each one as her friend. Fanny L. Adams was born in Newberry County, Carolina March 10, 1839. She was a member of the Presbyterian church. She leaves three sons and four daughters who are: R.L. Adams of Hammon, W. Adams of Apache, W.A. Adams of Cheyenne, Mrs. O.F. Pace of El Paso, Texas, Mrs. W.C. Black of Seagrave, Texas, Mrsw. J.H. Vosburg of near Moorewood and Mrs. Lee Crumal of Hammon, besides a number of grandchildren. The remains were taken to the Texmo Cemetery and placed there beside her husband. Reed Dean Ackley, son of J.T. and Flora Ackley, was born August 7, 1905 at Hammon, Oklahoma, and departeds this life in an Elk City hospital April 125, 1958 at the age of 52 years 8 months and 19 days. He was married to Miss Frances Hensley at Cheyenne, Oklahoma, July 12, 1924, and to this union were born three daughters, two of whom, with his wife, Frances, survive him. They are June Ackley of the home address, and Joan Tomberlin, Midwest City, Oklahoma. He is also survived by two grandsons, Mike and David Tomberlin, and a son-in-law, Leon Tomberlin, Midwest City, and Louise Turtle, who has been with his family the past three years; four brothers, including Buford Ackley, Hammon, Oklahoma, and one sister. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Jean, in 1929, his parents and two brothers. Reed was a resident of the Hammon community most of his life, and at the time of his death he and his family were residing on his farm, where he was born and reared. He leaves behind his loved ones and a host of friends, and loving memories of the good deeds he has done for those in need. We can not say, we will not say, that he is dead, he is just away. With a cheery smile and the wave of his hands; he has wandered into an unknown land. He was laid to rest in the Red Hill cemetery, Hammon, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, beside his infant daughter. J.T. Ackley, 64 years old, pioneer of this county, was fatally injured Sunday afternoon when he was struck by a southound M-K-T passenger train at the crossing on state highway 34 just north of Hammon. Mr. Ackley was returning to his home in a Chevrolet pick-up car. He drove onto the railroad crossing near the intersection on highway 34 and 33 as the train approached. The left side of the engine beam struck the automobile just back of the hood. Mr. Ackley received a severe fracture of the base of the skull, also a broken collar bone, broken shoulder and several broken ribs. The injury to the skull was given as the cause of death. James Thedore Ackley was born in the state of Ohio, Feburary 22, 1869 and died August 20, 1933, at Hammon, Oklahoma, at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 2 days. He came to Oklahoma in 1891, was married to Miss Flora Walker of Butler September 7, 1897, and to this union were born eight children, all of whom with his wife survive him. They are Mrs. Retta Creswell, George, Reed, Walker, Buford, Emory and Glenwood of Hammon and Hammon of Chicago. He is also survived by three brothers and one sister, only one of whom Bob Ackley of Grandfield, Oklahoma attended his funeral obsequies. Deceased's remains were returned to his home Monday, and at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, at the Church of Christ he funeral, conducted by elder McGaughey, was held The churcdh edifice was taxed to its utmost capacity to accommodate the immense assembly of friends who came to pay the last mark of respect to the memory of the Hammon pionewer interment was madse in Red Hill Cemetery where the remains were gently laid to rest. Mr. Ackley was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Ackley, and three brotherss, Walker, Reed and Emory. She had been ill sinced Monday of this week. She was born September 5, 1881 at Riverton, Nebraska and was married September 7, 1898 to J.T. Ackley who preceded her in death in 1933. They came to Roger Mills County in 1895 and made their home there since that time. Mrs. Ackley was a member of the Church of Christ at Hammon. One son, Walker Ackley, preceded her in death and the following children survive her --Mrs. Retta Creswell, Hammon, George Ackley, Clinton; Hammon Ackley, Brawley, California; Reed Ackley and Glenwood Ackley of Los Angeles, California. One sister Mrs. Maaggie Dean of Estancila, N.M.; and three half sisters, Mrs. Mable Shoun of Guthrie; Mrs. Dorothy Adams of Leedey; and three brothers Clarence Walker of Butler; Earl Walker of Yucapai, California and Orville Walker of San Bernardino, California; her step-mother, Mrs. Myrtle Walker of Butler and 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services will be held at the Church of Christ at Hammon with Tommy Hodge, minister, reading the final rites. Burial will be in Red Hill Cemetery with Martin-Hullum funeral directors in charge. She passed from this life on October 6, 2006 at the Clinton Regional hospital in Clinton, Oklahoma. Dorothey attended school at Telephone, Texas, Rhea, Oklahoma, Center Point, Oklahoma and Leedey, Oklahoma where she graduated with the class of 1950. On October 4, 1950 Dorothey married Gus Ray in Oceola, Oklahoma. To this union four children were born: Mitch, Marty, Charlie and Lila (Muffer). She married Ralph Billings, Sr. on December 7, 1960 in Santa Rosa, California. Three children were born to this union, Vickie, Lorie Ann, and Ralph Billings, Jr. After marriage she took up residence in Leedey, California, Kansas, Elk City, and Putnam, Oklahoma. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and gardening. She also greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothey became a member of the Church of Christ when she was thirteen years old. Those preceding Dorothey in death were her parents, Ernest and Beulah Martin; her husbands, Guy Ray and Ralph Billings, two brothers, Edwards and Floyd Martin; two sisters, Pauline Powers and Lucille Horton; one grandson, James Edward Ray; and one granddaughter, Charlene Wynn Ray. She is survived by her four sons: Mitchell Ray of Punam, Martin Ray and wife Annie of St. Joseph, Missouri, Charles Ray, and wife Laura of Foss Lake, Oklahoma, and Ralph Billingsw Jr., of Elk City, by her three daughters, Lila Muffet Woodring and husband Terry of Woodward, Oklahoma, Vickie Billings of Leedey, Oklahoma and Lorie Ann Billings of Burns Flat, Oklahoma; by one brother, Gene Martin and wife Freda of Searcy, Arkansas; by two sisters, Helen Weaver of Elk City, and Alice Ward of Ringling, Oklahoma; and one aunt, Festus Martin of Searcy, Arkansas; by twenty-two grandchildsren, numerous nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 10, 2006 in the Church of Christ, Leedey, Oklahoma with interment following in New Hermon Cemetery.
