I understand before Grady was it's own county it belonged to Pontontoc County, so I am hoping someone can help me. Richard A. Brown born May 26, 1860 Kansas married a gal named Anne or Annie he died December 31st, 1936 Grady County, Laverty, Oklahoma Rosehill Cemetery He came to Grady in 1907, Hillsboro Township which is southwest of Chickasha. It contains the towns of Norge and Laverty. Children included May, Irene, Clara, John H., Elmer E., & Ernest K. I believe this HAS to be my great-grandmother Margaret Ann Brown's brother Richard A. Brown based on the year and place he was born. I ordered a death certificate which states father unknown - mother unknown. I don't know WHY they moved to Oklahoma or how where to look for more information about this Richard A. Brown to prove or disprove his is Margaret's brother. I am so frustrated and would appreciate ANY help, Janet Hanson khanson2k@comcast.net

Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FcB.2ACI/1168 Message Board Post: Taken from The Evening News, newspaper in Ada, Oklahoma April 1907 "Mrs. Mary Bolen After a Noble Life Passes Away. Thursday, April 25, 1907, at 2:30 a.m., Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Bolen, the grand old lady, mother of Attorney James W. Bolen and Mrs. F S. Houpt, died in Ada at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Houpt on East 15th street. She had been confined to her bed since last fall, caused by her old age which had made her very feeble. Loving kindness was shown her and everything possible was done to prolong her life. She lived three-quarters of a century of a noble existence, loving wife and mother, and revered by all. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Houpt and were well attended by friends and by people who had learned to love and respect the grand old lady. Rev. T. L. Rippey of the Methodist church, and Rev. T. B. Harrell of the Baptist church, conducted the services. Interment was in Rosedale cemetery. The News most sincerely extends condolence to the bereaved family."
I remember this too I use to have a picture of it. Seems to me the story goes they were horse theives and were caught. They were hung where Rhynes furniture store is now on Main Street. I remember the book you are talking about. The ada public libary use to have a copy.I can remember this story because My grandfather was there at the hanging. He later became sheriff of Pontotoc county. Well anyways I hope that helped. Hello Rebecca: I have a copy of "The Early History of Ada" by: J. Hugh Biles that was published by the Oklahoma State Bank of Ada, Oklahoma - 1954. The hanging you mention is pictured on page 133....captioned as follows: Lynching, April 19, 1909, of suspects in the murder of A. A. (Gus) Bobbitt, L. to r.: Jim Miller, Joe Allen, B. B. Burwell, Jesse West. The barn, site of the lynching was formerly owned by J. D. (Doc) Huddleston, uncle of H. J. Huddleston, and was located at 117-19 N. Townsend. (Courtesy Ross Tipton.) Note: The picture shows all four men hanging from the rafters, a white horse eating something on the ground.....numerous people, including adults and children alike peering inside through the cracks in the wall. I bought my book from a local bookstore on West 12th Street there in Ada a few years back....it had penciled in "2nd Ed. 3L6 $75.00 Okla" If I were computer literate I would be delighted to scan the picture and forward it, but, I don't have the foggiest on how to do that. HELP!!!!!!! Check out my website www.earljones.net and see if we might have links in our families. Earl L. There is a book that was published about the "hangings". I can't help you out with the name of it, but the Pontotoc County Library might be able to provide that information. Either that or the Genealogical Society. I remember hearing my Grandfather talk about how they hanged 4 guys at the same time in Ada. He was a boy at the time and wanted "to go down to the barn to see it" but his mom wouldn't let him go. Sounds grusome to me. Just a kids curiosity trying to get the best of him, I guess. Thank goodness for Mom's. Becky
