    1. [OKPONTOT] CHOCTAW-WEB UPDATE, DEC. 3, 2000
    2. For new subscribers: this is an update of the Choctaw-Web which is devoted to Choctaw genealogy, census and resources. It is the only site on the internet with 1885 Choctaw Nation Census. The main page is: <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/">Click here: WELCOME </A> http://www.choctaw-web.com/ We were busy this week with some family obligations but did managed a couple of new pages. The really big news is that we are changing our address. The new address is: www.choctaw-web.com We are really excited about the change as it will allow us a little more space and flexibility than we had before. We are still ardent supports of rootsweb and will be using the mailing system to post this newsletter. For a while, both websites will be up but the latest updates may not be available at the old ~impson site. Please bookmark the new address. Along with the change, Choctaw-web.com is proudly welcoming a new sponsor, Many Cats Trading Co. See the unusual and unique handmade jewelry at www.barkingwaters.com <A HREF="http://www.barkingwaters.com/">Click here: Many Cats Trading Co. </A> Here's what is new this week at the Choctaw-Web : GENEALOGY LESSONS This week's genealogy lesson (no. 8) concerns the 1900 census. It was the first census that listed Indians and whites together, as by this time, whites made up more than 90 percent of the population schedule. The Indian schedule was at the end of each enumeration district. If you ancestors appeared on the 1900, they fulfilled the residency requirement for the Dawes Final Roll. http://www.choctaw-web.com/genealogy_8.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/genealogy_8.htm">Click here: GENEALOGY 8 </A> Other Recent Uploads: Words of Wisdom by Shawnee chief Tecumseh you will want to bookmark and share with others. http://www.choctaw-web.com/words.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/words.htm">Click here: WORDS </A> New Norma Howard Artwork The Misississippi Choctaw artist sketched Pickin Cotton, Raccoon Dance, Dinner on the Ground and First Day at School. http://www.choctaw-web.com/norma_howard.htm VANISHING RACE Written about the Choctaw tribe by Guy Augustus Crossett and published earlier in Oklahoma Chronicles. http://www.choctaw-web.com/vanishing_race.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/vanishing_race.htm">Click here: VANISHING RACE </A> CHOCTAW MAP A useful map shows the Choctaw Nation counties in 1885 layered over modern counties. http://www.choctaw-web.com/new_page_2.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/new_page_2.htm">Click here: CHOCTAW MAP </A> ************ Also: Well-Known Choctaws, including Moshulatubbe, Hudson, Pitchlynn and Krebs. http://www.choctaw-web.com/well-known.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/well-known.htm">Click here: WELL-KNOWN </A> ****** a SITE MAP ito enhance navigation to various pages. http://www.choctaw-web.com/site_map.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/site_map.htm">Click here: SITE MAP </A> ****** 1885 Choctaw Nation Census for counties of ATOKA , BLUE , BOKTOLO, CEDAR, EAGLE, JACKS FORK, TOWSON , WADE, KIAMITIA, San Bois, SUGAR LOAF and SKULLYVILLE plus 1929 Restricted Census. http://www.choctaw-web.com/census.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/census.htm">Click here: CENSUS </A> Allied families include: ADAMS, ANDERSON, BOHANNON ,DANENHOUR, FLETCHER, FOLSOM, FREENY, GARDNER, HAMPTON, HEWITT, JONES, MACKEY, MURPHEY, ROBINSON, and TOAZ. http://www.choctaw-web.com/allies.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/allies.htm">Click here: ALLIES </A> RESOURCES: O'Bierne's Leaders, Indians and Intruders, favorite links, artist http://www.choctaw-web.com/come_back.htm <A HREF="http://www.choctaw-web.com/come_back.htm">Click here: RESOURCES </A> ************ Because of my census transcription and website work, right now I am unable to answer all my e-mail personally but please visit my website to continue your search for ancestors. Can you contact me at either my California e-mail address: (sorry, the address was edited out)but I will return to Oregon at the end of the December, 2000. I sent your name and e-mail to Jerry Spears who was also reseaching Mary Jane Spears, but sent another note to him to inform him your e-mail address did not work today. His e-mail address is:(also edited out by this bot)so contact me through this Query - I will check it when I get to my California residence. At this point I do not know how either of you are connected to Mary Jane Spears, so I would love to hear further from each of you and anyone else for that matter that may have some pieces to this puzzle. Mary Jane Spears Holbert was Cherokee (quite possible from Indiana or Illinois)was my great grandmother married to Marvel Greenberry Holbert in Sulphur Springs, TX. "Green" was from Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina areas - and at a place called Holbert's Cove. His father is believed to be John O. Halbert/Holbert from VA. Hope this helps some. Happy Hunting! Anne Mego

I don't know where they came from but Saline Co IL as you suggest is probably correct. I just obtained the information prior to my coming up to Oregon and I have not had time to do further research on it. I found it interesting that Marvel Greenberry Holbert married Mary Jane Spears. I don't know if she was related to Martha, but it seems likely although I have not found a connection - yet! Mary Jane Spears was Cherokee, but I am not sure if Martha Jane Spears was also. (My uncle told me his maternal grandparents were Indian but neither ever applied for their benefits.) Keep me posted if you find out anything on these people - I would appreciate it very much. Marvel "Green" Greenberry Holbert's father is believed to be John O. Halbert/Holbert and I believe they were from Virginia > West Virginia > North Carolina, etc. Understand there was a place called Holbert's Cove. Green was killed near Sulphur Springs, TX according to my uncle and after his death, Grandmother Holbert came to live with the Parker family in Pontotoc County until her death in 1914. Sorry I don't have more information for you at this time, but keep in touch. Family Love, Anne Mego

    1. [OKPONTOT] VOTE FOR CHOCTAW-WEB
    2. Please read these instructions and vote for the Choctaw-Web as best website by Nov. 30. thanks, rusty lang, web administrator http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~impson Which Site Is the "Best Genealogy Site on the Web"? Who has the best genealogy-related World Wide Web site? Do you have an opinion? If so, you can make your opinion heard in the fourth annual "Best Genealogy Site on the World Wide Web" award. You have the opportunity to honor a genealogy Web site with a "Readers' Choice Award" to be issued by this newsletter. The readers of this newsletter will pick the site to be named "Best Genealogy Site on the World Wide Web." This will be the fourth year that the readers of this newsletter have conferred such an award. I won't mention who won the award previously, as I don't want to influence this year's nominations. However, I will mention them again at the end of this year's elections. What guidelines are used to define the "Best Genealogy Site on the World Wide Web"? That is strictly up to you. You can nominate a site because it is interesting, because it has nice graphics, because it has excellent maps, or because it is full of valuable genealogy reference materials. I would suggest that you nominate a site because it is the one genealogy Web site you go back to and visit time and time again. However, even that guideline is optional. The choice is yours to make. When you cast your vote, you might write a couple of sentences about why you think this site is best, although that description is not absolutely required. I have set up an "electronic voting machine" that you can use to cast a vote for this "Best of the Web" award. I have great confidence in this voting machine; Florida residents will not have to conduct a recount! You can vote at any time from now until midnight Eastern Time on 30 November 2000. The voting machine will then tabulate the results. I will announce the winner in the December 2 newsletter. The winning World Wide Web site will then be allowed to mention the award on its Web site. That Web site also will be entitled to all the fame and notoriety that is included with this "Online Genealogy Newsletter's Readers' Choice Award." Enough said! To cast your vote, you must follow these instructions EXACTLY. A computer is tabulating the results, not a human being. Computers are not very good at interpreting what you meant to say; you have to be precise when talking to a computer. You must enter your vote in exactly the proper format. To cast a vote for "Best Genealogy Site on the World Wide Web," send an e-mail to: [email protected] The subject of the message must contain the full Web site address and nothing else. For instance, the message subject might be: http://www.rootscomputing.com p The message subject (some e-mail programs will say "Message Title" instead of "subject") MUST start with: (IF CHOCTAW-WEB IS YOUR FAVORITE, IT WOULD BE:) http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~impson Please list the exact address in the message subject, but do not add any other words. Do not say, "My vote is . . ." or anything like that in the subject; simply list the actual URL beginning with the letters http://. None of the following three examples will work: www.xyz.com My vote is for www.xyz.com My favorite Web site is xyz.com None of the three previous examples begin with http://, and therefore the computer program that tabulates the vote will ignore them. If you send your vote properly, you will receive a reply acknowledging the receipt of your nomination. You are encouraged to tell why you think your favorite site deserves such an award. You can do so by writing comments in the body of the e-mail. The automatic vote tally software will ignore the body text. However, once the votes are tallied, a human will read all the messages that nominated the winning site and will look for any comments about that site. Some of those comments may be published in the December 2 newsletter. By writing text in the message body, you are giving permission to reprint your name and comments in this newsletter. If you do not want your words or name published, please do not write anything in the message body. IAll votes must be received on or before 30 November 2000. You must send your vote to: [email protected] The message subject line must contain the Web site's complete address (URL) and must start with: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~impson OK, which site is the "Best Genealogy Site on the Web"? Your vote counts.

    2. This is forwarded from Rootsweb Missing Links. Perhaps someone knows this family. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I have a smaller than pocket-sized notebook belonging to World War II veteran William David CASTO from Oklahoma, possibly Kosoma or Talihina. This little book seems to cover the period 1943-1945 and is full of his handwritten notes, names and addresses, information about his military enlistment, where he was stationed and such. There is a tiny black and white photo of William D. CASTO taped to the cover and another on the first page. He was in the Navy, serial no. 886-95-28. The only other CASTO name in the book is Mrs. Lydia CASTO, General Delivery, Kosoma, Oklahoma. I would like to return this to Mr. CASTO's family." Christy M.
