On the Social Security Index Deaths, listed Ada, Pontotoc, OK as the last paid benefits. I believe Ernest is my Grandfathers brother. His father's name is William Matthew Grose and mother's name is Theressa Welllington. Any information is appreciated and will share information I have.

    3. You should start with the 1920 Federal Census where they were living at that time. This will give you information as to where each person in the household was born, how long they have been married, age, relationship to head of house, whether they owned or rented their house. If they owned, you can check County Courthouse for deeds, ect. Work backwards from the 1920 to earlier time using census records which are still taken every ten years since 1790. Check witht the Oklahoma State Historical Society in Oklahoma City about the possibility of an enrollment packet for the surname Witcher. If there is one, you will find worlds of information in it. I believe the research fee is $20.00 now, plus the cost of copies. Good Luck in your search. Billieee

    3. James A. McCord, born at Bolivar, Tennessee, and his wife Ida (Cushman) McCord, came to Indian Territory, and were among the earliest settlers at Roff. They later moved to Ahloso, where he operated the first store and post office in that community. Their children were: Ruth McCord Russell; Hattie McCord Owensby; Mary McCord Tucker; Edd McCord; Robert McCord; and, Calvin P. McCord. Calvin P. McCord was born 16 July 1906, in Ada, and lived here all his life. He went to school at Ahloso. On 26 April 1930, he married Georgia Stripling, in Blanchard, Oklahoma. Calvin McCord died 10 July 1974. Check out our book list on the Pontotoc County web page. This is in one of the History of Pontotoc County books that is available through the Historical Society.

    3. Hello List- I am in need of trying to find Joe James and Lucy Gurtie. I dont know any vital information on Joe James but he probably lived in the Pontotoc area for some time. Joe James was the father of Christine. Christine Henrietta James was married twice. first to Bill McCarty and then to Jeff Winkler. Joe james may have died in Pontotoc and would like some addreess of funeral homes and cementeries to check. also do you have a local historical or genealogical society, where i might write?? I dont know where Joe James and Lucy( Gurtie) Risenhoover may have gotten married, may have been in Pontotoc so if any one has acces to a marriage book, it would be helpful, the marriage before 1919.     3. My wife's mother, HATTYE BATES MCCORD was born near ROFF , OKLAHOMA in 1897. She went to teachers college in ADA ,OK. and was a shool teacher around ADA, OK for 9yrs in the 1920's. According to family history, Hattye's father, JAMES ARTHUR MCCORD, started the town of AHLOSO when he opened a General Store and became the first Postmaster. He also had a small farm in AHLOSO. His wife MARY IDA CUSHMAN MCCORD served as Postmistress and they raised 3 girls and 3 boys in PONTOTOC CO. The odd thing about the MCCORD family of PONTOTOC COUNTY is that search engines etc., reveal little info about them. Does anyone have any information or stories about this family? Bill

Her name was Lucy( Gurtie) Risenhoover. she married Joe James( between 1914 and 1919) either In Pontotoc county or Johnston, county, the time frame could have ben between 1914 and 1919. They had a daughter named Christine James that was born 10-27-1919. Johnston county. It could be that Joe James was from Pontotoc county originally and either he died in the county or he died in Johnston.. I would appreciate any help. with this families information. Thanks.
