    2. Susan, Hopefully someone will know. My response on the mail list has already put me in touch with someone I knew as a little girl and whose grandparents lived next door to mine for years. Mother has class pictures from Fitzhugh in the 40's and I will probably post some of those. I will send the link when I get them scanned in and up. Donna

    3. Hi Donna! I guess I should start by telling you that I'm not from Vanoss. My father, PJ Richardson, was from Vanoss (son of Ples and Lou Richardson). He was raised there and went to school at Vanoss school. His sisters and brothers are: Marie Richardson Alford (deceased), Flora Richardson Shumard (deceased), Helen Richardson Heath, Bernice Richardson Turner, Clark Richardson (deceased), Florence Richardson Webb (deceased), Ruby Richardson Gurley, Joe Richardson (deceased), Mary Lou Richardson Covert, Percy Richardson (deceased), and Margaret Sue Richardson Johnson. The sisters who are still living are in the Roff/Ada area. Aunt Bernice has a daughter, whose name escapes me, who (at one time) taught at Vanoss School. She may still be teaching there. I live in CA, and have all my life. I have visited the Ada area a couple of times. I recently started tracing my dad's history and have met so many kind, interesting people in the course of my research. Thank you for posting the photo...I hope someone recognizes themselves or someone they know and can get in touch. 1. [OKPONTOT] NATIVE AMERICAN RESEARCH
    2. The following article is from a Heritage Books newsletter. Hope someone finds it helpful. "Cuzn Art" NATIVE AMERICAN RESEARCH: ------------------------- One common mistake made by people researching Indian heritage is that they forget the basic principals of genealogy. You must start with your self and work back. Check birth, death and marriage records, as well as Federal and Indian census records. Remember there are only two types of records that do not apply to Indians- early tax records and immigration records. It also important to throw off preconceived notions. When researching it is often easier to locate a mixed blood then a full blood. So it is often easier to start looking for the children rather than the parents. It is also not always necessary to know the Indian name of your ancestor because most rolls were taken by whites who recorded the English names.
