Posted on: Ottawa County Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Ottawa/10497 Surname: Mitchell, Arnold, Bishop ------------------------- Not sure if the Mitchell's I'm looking for are from Ottawa County, but I know my father's mother was full-blooded Cherokee. Her name was Edna Mitchell. From what my father has told me, his grandfather's name was Thomas Mitchell & his grandmother's name was Grace Mitchell. Don't know too much about them, because Edna died when my dad was young & he was put in a foster home. He's found some family after 30 years, but no one seems to know the whole story.

Can someone help?
"Forty Years Among the Indians" is the correct title for the book I was thinking of. Thanks for the correction. Eleanor
According to old family stories a couple of brothers were in Miami, OK and were playing poker and drinking and they got into a fight and one of the brothers shot a man - The time period for this episode was between 1871 and 1877- They may have stolen a horse too- Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated- Thank you, Donna in AL
That is a very common story for that era and area. My own father and uncles are known to go to Picher on the weekend, just looking for a fight, in the 1920's and 1930's. If they couldn't pick one with others they would fight each other and there were seven of them! :>) Seems to be one of the rare forms of entertainment in those days. I'm familiar with a book "Forty Years Among the Indians" by Jeremiah Hubbard. One section of the book is a listing of all of the marriages he performed. If you local library doesn't have it, you can have your local library obtain it from any library in the U.S. that has it and participates in the interlibrary loan program. There may be a nominal cost involved. Jeremiah Hubbard was a Quaker/Friends minister and was in the Miami and Wyandott, OK area extensive but also into all surrounding Indian territories. Paul Price
I think I have seen this book in the genealogy section of the public library in Grove, OK. [email protected] wrote: > There is a book, "Life Among the Indians" I bellieve it is called. Worth a try. The Genealogical Society in Miami probably has the book. My mother has it but she is in CA and not able to do dependable look-ups. If you don't locate the book, write me at [email protected]
