Ok Query Forum Post --- A new message, "Johnston/Cherokee," was posted by Ruth Dirk on Sat, 25 Mar 2000 --- Surname: Johnston --- NAME: Ruth Dirk EMAIL: rdirk@hotmail.com DATE: Mar 25 2000 --- QRYTEXT: Johnston, Carl C. My mother, Emogene Johnston, was born in Okmulgee, Okmulgee Co., May 6, 1930. Her parents were Carl C. Johnston and Rena V. Patrick. The family, which had 13 children, moved to California when my mother was young. Mama told me that grandpa was half Cherokee and that he had been adopted by a white family. She also told me that his original birth name was Johnson. He died in California in 1962 (I think). I'm stuck and would appreciate any help. Was there a practice in Oklahoma in the late 1800s or early 1900s for white families to adopt orphaned Indian children? I can't find record of grandpa anywhere.. ============================
