I was trying to find this information for my ailing Aunt who was in the process of telling me about her marriage to my Uncle Charlie Howard and the struggles they endured in the early years of their marriage. She couldn't remember the name of the plant and remembered less about the ball team, only that he was a real good pitcher. I definitely will check out the Henryetta site, even though my Aunt passed away today at about 11:12 a.m. mst, from cancer. Your kind help will be passed on to her descendants. Thank you again, Sandy in AZ.

Henryetta has a web page with information on the history of the glass plant. PPG left Henryetta in the 70's (?). Hope this helps. You may be able to contact the Henryetta Library and maybe they can help you some more especially with the baseball team.

Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Okmulgee/567 Surname: HOWARD ------------------------- Hello, I am responding to your HOWARD posting again, only this time it is with HOWARD's ! I have learned recently that one of my Uncles, Charlie HOWARD and his family lived in Okmulgee during the late 1920's to the late 1930's. He worked for the Graham Glass Factory there and was on the baseball team for the state of OK. I also learned he had an Uncle, my G-Uncle named Lionel HOWARD lived there as well. This I am still checking on. From what family members have said, Lionel was married to a lady named Della Rains or Raney, this too is unverified, but I still digging. If any of this sounds familiar, just let me know, ok? Thanks, Sandy in AZ.

As you can see, I have a long line of names I am searching for and most of them were from the AR.-OK.- MO.- and TX. areas. I have a bit of info on my HOWARD'S but not near enough, some of their names are... Thomas HOWARD, his three sons Daniel Thomas HOWARD, Lionel HOWARD and 'Tony' HOWARD, and one daughter named Violet A. or H. HOWARD. I have all of Daniel's kids names but none for the rest of the siblings. I know that Lionel had several but do not know their names or sexes. I know nothing at all about Tony or Violet. A couple of other names that I have but can't identify are of two women, one is Minerva (?) and the other is Theronia Vivian HOWARD who I think will end up being a daughter of Lionel's. He signs her marriage license to Jesse J. ROSS anyway. That's about all I have on this line, if anything rings a bell just let me know, ok? Thanks again, Sandy in AZ.

I think this smoke stack was a packing plant, but not positive. >There was also some kind of company located south of town--long gone by the 1950's that may have been a glass company. The only thing remaining was a brick smoke stack with a large letter "B" on it. (The library in Okmulgee could probably help there identify this company and tell you if it was a glass plant)<

Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Okmulgee/559 Surname: Roberts ------------------------- Seeking information re: Mort & Ollie Roberts, listed in 1910 census as residing in Okmulgee City, Okmulgee twnshp, ward 2, Okmulgee county, Oklahoma. 6 children listed: Willie (female age 16), Anna M.(age 19), Hazel H.(age 9), See(male age 6), Evelin (age 4 born in Oklahoma), Bessie (age 2). What happened to this family? Mort is the brother of my great-grandfather, born in Indiana, children born KY. Trying to located descendants.
Ball Brother's (later Ball Corporation) was first Pine Glass. It was only Pine for one year, but that was probably in the 20's. Ball's plant closed within the last 5 years. It was opened by Pine Oil to use their natural gas, but sold after one year to Ball. Their headquarters used to be in Muncie, IN American was American Window Glass, but it would not have been that early. My dad was among the first group hired there, and that was around 1950. BTW, it was eventually American-St. Gobain and closed down in the early 1970's. The company may still be in existence. I think the head quarters was in KY or TN There was a Southwest Glass Company. It had already closed by the time American opened, so it may have been there during the 20's-30's It was located south of town on what is now 20th street. There was also some kind of company located south of town--long gone by the 1950's that may have been a glass company. The only thing remaining was a brick smoke stack with a large letter "B" on it. (The library in Okmulgee could probably help there identify this company and tell you if it was a glass plant) In Henryetta, 15 miles south of Okmulgee was a PPG glass plant, but I'd guess it was probably started after the period you are looking for. The reason for all the glass plants was the abundance of natural gas in the area with could be purchased cheaply to power the furnaces. The Ball Brother's glass plant in Okmulgee comes to mind first. They made those famous Ball canning jars. There was a second glass plant in Okmulgee. It use to be American owned but some years before it shut down it was bought by a French company. I think the original name was American Glass Factory, later changed to American-Saint Gobaine, and that French spell is phonetic rather than literal !! I don't think either plant is operating today, although they are both still there. There are mounds of glass shards that really cast a beautiful light with the sun hits them. They were both going full blast when I live in Okmulgee during the 60's. Perhaps the library in Okmulgee could give you some answers to both your questions. One of my Uncles, Charlie HOWARD, b. 1909 in OK. (now deceased) worked for a glass factory in or near Okmulgee, OK. in the late 1920's or early 30's. Could someone tell me anything about that factory? He also played baseball in the same area. I have been told he was good enough to have been asked to sign up for the Majors during this same timeframe, unknown which team. I do know that family lore has told many tales of his baseball 'career' I know also that this glass factory gave him time off from work to go down to Bower, OK. for his ball games. Does anyone know which team would have been in that area during the 20's and 30's ? If anyone has any ideas as to how I could learn more about this factory and ball team, I really would appreciate hearing from you. One sad note... Uncle Charlie's widow, Lahoma (WILSON) HOWARD is gravely ill as I write this. Their only daughter just called today with this hearbreaking news. Thanks for any help. Sandy in AZ.
