Posted on: Okmulgee Co. Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Okmulgee/649 Surname: Edwards, Matthews, Speak ------------------------- Ellen Speak/Speake/Speaks from Okmulgee Co. OK married Mayhew Matthews from TN ca. 1890's. They had 4 children; Maude, Mae, Pearl, and Dan. I don't know if they divorce or if Mayhew dies, but by ca 1908 Ellen is married to an Edwards and they have a son Eddie. Ellen is travling on a train with just the children, north of Dallas Texas when she up and dies stranding the children in the Allen/McKinney Texas area. Sketchy family lore says that this Edwards fella comes and takes only his son Eddie to raise. The two oldest girls are eventually returned to relatives in OK to be raised so this could be either the Matthews or Speak families. But Pearl, my grandmother, about 6 years old at the time is totally abandoned and eventually taken in by a family in the Allen/McKinney area by the name of "Cotton" (I been told) and raised. This is almost a 100 year old mystery. Up until September of this year we didn't even know the names of Pearl's parents ... Mayhew and Ellen Speak Matthews. We only knew her last name was Matthews. During her lifetime she found all her brothes and sisters, but she never, ever spoke of her parents. So the search begins .. can anyone fill in some blanks for us?

Posted on: Okmulgee Co. Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Okmulgee/640 Surname: Carter, McNeill, Cantrell, Killian, Thrasher ------------------------- I'm looking for the family of My Grandmother's sister, Ella/Ellie McNeill Carter! I don't have a whole lot to go on but will share what I have. Ella/Ellie is (I believe) third child of William Jefferson (Billy Fox) McNeill and Mary Francis Cantrell McNeill of Iuka, Baxter and Izard Co., AR. Her siblings were Cleveland, Katherine (Kate) m. John Smith lived Henryietta, OK, Deborah (Deb) m. Charles Daniel (Charlie) Walker, Mary JeRusha (Rusha) m. John Miller, Alba Edison (Albie) m. Herbert A. (Hub) Peck (my grandparents) and Talmadge(Tal) m. Ruby Lofton. My grandmother married about 1917, since Ella was an older sister I would suspect she married about 1914-5 (although I don't think I have found a marriage record yet!) I believe they had about 4-5 male children, I think they may have all been born in AR. I think they moved from Izard Co., AR to OK in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Shortly after the family moved to OK,( thinking maybe in Olkmulgee area) Ella/Ellie died mysteriously. I do not know the date of her death. The only thing that I know specifically about the manner in which she died was from the stories of a cousin of my Father. Herman McNeill (who was son of Cleveand, the eldest brother in that family) was approximately the age of my Father (b. 1920) and I believe would have been 12 or 13 years old at the time of Ella's death, went to visit his aunt Ella that day. When he visited her house she seemed fine and had gone out into the garden and was either working some area of soil for planting or was gathering produce for the family's meal. When Herman had left her house she was just fine. Then, later that day Cleveland was notified that his sister had died. The children of Cleveland's just didn't believe it until they went to the Carter home and saw their cousins. Now exactly when this was or in what specific town in OK, I really am not sure. I seem to remember the older relatives talking about Okmulkgee and I have wondered if that may have been where this all occured but I honestly don't have a town name. I'm not sure there are any of the older generation still around to ask. Does anyone have connections to this Carter family? I don't even know the children of Ella and Bob's names. I would think because of their ages that Bob Carter would have married again, after Ella's death but I do not know that! If anyone has any knowledge of this family or of the sudden death of Ella McNeill Carter in Oklahoma, would you please get back to me? I am very interested in finding descendants of this couple and would certainly appreciate your help! Thank you very much in advance for any assistance you can provide! Donna P.S. I also have no information about parents of Bob Carter or anything about his siblings!
Hi everyone, For November's roll call project, I would like to give you the URLs to our GenConnect message boards, and ask you to gather family information to post to the boards. I'll also include a couple of pointers on how to better utilize the boards. Since the Rootsweb "gateway" system was put into place last April, posts to each of the seven boards are now automatically forwarded to our mailing list. The system has proven successful and use of the boards continues to increase. There are seven boards -- one for QUERIES, and six for DOCUMENTS. - -------------------------------------------------------------- http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ok/Okmulgee http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ok/OkmulgeeBibl http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ok/OkmulgeeBios http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ok/OkmulgeeDeed http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ok/OkmulgeeObits http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ok/OkmulgeePens http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ok/OkmulgeeWill - -------------------------------------------------------------- Queries: For all Queries -- even though it may refer to one of the other subjects. Bible Records: Copy the names and dates exactly as they appear in your family Bible. Give the date the Bible was published, and also its current owner/location. Biographies: Bios can be an informal narrative you've written of someone's life. It can be a passage of a printed text -- be sure to cite your sources. Deeds: Deeds, land exchanges, or land grant records. Transcribe the text and tell where the record can be located. Obituaries: Transcribe newspaper death notices. Give the name of the newspaper and date of the article. Pensions: Military pensions records. I've found various war records at the National Archives. Many include pension information. Wills: Transcribe wills verbatim and tell where the record can be located. As you can see, the more we use the GenConnect boards, the more valuable a research source they will become. Post your information directly to the boards, and within seconds the post will also appear on our mailing list. One last point -- Since posts to the boards will be seen by a wider circle of family researchers, you may get responses from people who are not on our mailing list. To make certain everyone sees the resulting discussions, you'll need to be sure you respond to the board. Good Luck! LaRae OKOKMULG[EE] listmgr.
Posted on: Okmulgee Co. Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Okmulgee/639 Surname: Story ------------------------- Dear Mary Francis, My husband was raised in Schulter which is just south of Okmulgee. I have never heard him or his family mention any other Story's in the county. My father-in-law's grandfather, James Melvin Story, was raised in Arkansas and married a Susan Catherine Clark before moving to Oklahoma. I also was raised in Okmulgee County, in Dewar. Frank and I spent our "honeymoon" in Okmulgee. Since our name is Story and that was not a common name in the area, there is a good chance that there is a connection there somewhere. Please feel free to email and I will send what info I have and will ask family members for more info if they have. Good luck and let me know. Medetta Robbins Story

Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Okmulgee/638 Surname: Corbin ------------------------- I don't know if this will help or not, but there was a Glen Corbin that lived in Dewar in Okmulgee county during the 1960's. Don't know if he can help, but might be worth checking out. I think his wife's name was Glenda. Good hunting. Medetta Story
Medetta: I am excited to hear from a Story in Oklahoma. My grandfather Thomas Cleveland Story "Cleve" died in Okmulgee in 1949. He was born in Sebastion County,Arkansas. Apparently he was the only child of John P. Story and Inola Dean Story. John later married a Alice and had other children: Claude C., Clyde R., Homer H, Louis M., Wilbur E., Joe A., and Mary B. Inola married Elbridge Simmons in Arkansa and had: Aaron, Lee, Bertha May and Dee Ernest Simmons. She died in Stigler Oklahoma. A lot of these people lived in Okmulgee at one time because I remember going there a lot as a child. All I remember is that my grandfather Cleve lived in Morris at 184 N. A Street when he died but must have been in the hospital in Okmulgee. He was buried from the Buchanan Funeral Home in Okmulgee. It says he is buried at Odd Fellow in Morris, Oklahoma. My parents are dead so I am having trouble with information. I can't find a listing for such a cemetary in Okmulgee Co. After Cleve died I believe my family lost track of his second wife Mildred. I can't find any information about my grandmother Ora Mary Story (I belive her maiden name was Taylor) I am trying to trace information about John P. Story. We know he was born in Texas, and traveled a lot. He lived in the Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas area. So I am hoping to find some decendents that knows more than I do. One day I hope to come back and do some searching, although I am not quite sure where to start as they seem to move so much. If any of the names ring a bell, please let me know. Fran Rose
