Ed was a longtime resident of Medford. He was born in Oklahoma City, February 13, 1929, to Edgar Martin Evans and Clara Carolina (Oswald). The youngest of five children, he left home at 17, in the company of Larry Briggs and Hack Castor. They were seeking fame and fortune, albeit through hard work, following the "harvesters" across the West and up through California, to settle in the Rogue Valley. The three friends joined the Medford Fire Department, where Ed served as a fireman as well as a mechanic for 28 years, when he retired early due to an injury. He also worked as a mechanic for the Sam Jennings Company. The Sam Jennings' family remained Ed's second family for the rest of his life. Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Donna Jean (Hines); his mother, Clara; father, Edgar; and his siblings, Paul Kenneth Evans, Cleo Lorraine Craft, and Ivan Morris Evans. He is survived by his sister, Bette Mae Dennis; three children, Lynda Evans (Lowell Sather), Pam Pooley (Doug), and Rick Evans (Rita); six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and long time companion, Darlene Nelson, of the Rogue Valley. Our dad lived his life exactly the way he wanted. He hunted, fished, traveled, played poker and the ponies, and always helped others. He was generous and fun with friends, family and especially children. Everyone liked Ed and enjoyed his company. He will be missed by friends and family throughout the Western States and Canada. Please join us in remembering Ed Evans, Thursday, December 18, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Siskiyou Memorial, reception to follow.
