Can someone tell me what a "sooner" is. This notation was on a record of someone that died in Shelby Co., TN in 1903 and buried in Oklahoma. Thanks. Karen
The state of Oklahoma had been divided into two sections: the "Indian Territory", and the "Oklahoma Territory". The former was set aside for the settlement of Native Americans (hence the name), while the latter was reserved for white settlement and gradually opened up to pioneers, section by section, throughout the late 19th century. "Sooners" was the term applied to those who entered the territory before the actual start of the "rushes" that were sponsored by the U.S. government. This attraction of free land brought out the malevolent intent of some people who then fiercely defended their ill-gotten gains. Since that time the state of Oklahoma has been nicknamed "The Sooner State". Gene At 11:49 AM 4/17/2005, [email protected] wrote: >Can someone tell me what a "sooner" is. Not easily anyway, since about all that existed at that time was a train station and post office. The city didn't get populated until the land opening on 22 April 1889 when a tent city sprang up around the train station. The place was first known as Oklahoma Station. The name wasn't officially changed to Oklahoma City until 1 Jul 1923 but it was commonly called Oklahoma City since the time of the land opening. John Berry Howard is supposedly buried in the Maywood Cemetery in Oklahoma Co. I have been unable to locate that name online. Can anyone tell me if it exists? I am hoping to get a photo of his marker. It is also possible, that his mother, Gemima, may be buried in the same cemetery. Thank you very much. Karen
Dear Fellow Researchers: I am wondering if there's anyway to confirm the death of Gemima Mable Anthony Howard that died 25 June 1888 in Oklahoma City? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Karen
