GRIEP DIES IN HOSPITAL - Miss Lena A. Griep, 81-year-old retired nurse of 615 N. Lee, died Monday in St. Anthony's hospital following a lengthy illness. Servcies are scheduled tentatively for 10 a.m. Thursday in Watts funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Miss Griep graduated from the Cook County hospital school of nursing, Chicago, in 1909, and in 1917 came to Oklahoma. Until Jan. 1, 1923, she was in charge of the El Reno sanitarium. From 1923 to 1926 she was in charge of the Oklahoma hospital, Tulsa. After practicing privately for a number of years, she retired in 1942. She had lived in Oklahoma City since 1947 with a sister, Miss Elsie M. Griep, the sole survivor." This must be the right one, even though there is no mention of a husband anywhere.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YaB.2ACI/1431.2 Message Board Post: from the Daily Oklahoman, Oklahoma City, 19 Aug 1972, p5: "HOSPITAL LEASED AS ALCOHOL UNIT - Central State Hospital announced Friday that it has leased the Hubbard Hospital and Clinic at 1501 NE 11 to implement the second phase of a federally-financed alcohol treatment center ... The Hubbard Hospital was founded in 1926 by Dr. John C. Hubbard, who attended medical school after first having achieved a degree of success as an actor and singer. He had three sons, all of whom became doctors. In 1946, Dr. Hubbard gave a fourth interest to each of his sons and five years later turned the entire institution over to his sons. The three sons operated the hospital unitl 1959 when death struck the elder Dr. Hubbard in January at the age of 74. One son, Dr. Ralph Hubbard died at age 51 in May of the same year. Since that time, the hospital and clinic was operated by Drs. William and John Hubbard. In 1970, after 44 years of operation, the hospital was closed because of financial problems associated with Medicare." from the Oklahoma Department of Health's website at: http://www.health.state.ok.us/program/vital/brec.html "Oklahoma began filing birth and death records in October of 1908. It was not mandatory, however, that these records be filed until 1917. Because birth and death records were not required in years past as they are today for identification or settlement of claims in matters of death, the filing process in many years prior to 1940 are sketchy. It is the responsibility of the hospital, attendant at birth or the funeral director in each matter of birth or death to properly obtain the information needed and file the certificate in a timely manner." I will see if I can find out any more about the fate of the records.
