This list is now being moderated. I will forward to the list any message dealing with the subject of the list, all others will be deleted. If you copy information from a film you still need to deal with the copyright. I contacted a representative of the LDS Church Family History Center and was told that they have contracts with those who own the information they film. The original copyright still stands, meaning if a entire book is filmed, the copyright on the book still stand and we as researchers cannot go in and copy the book, page by page, word for word and publish it ourselves. If you are transcribing from microfilm, you can post anywhere you want. Just because some else also has the same microfilm roll, does not mean they have copyright! I imagine that your postings are parallel or the same as what the society has printed off for sale. So they may have assumed you have taken your material from their phamplets or books. Same original material, same information. Maybe someone should have asked first eh? Before jumping and accusing. ----- Original Message ----- From: <SMM1033@aol.com> To: <OKMUSKOG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 23, 2003 10:49 PM Subject: Re: [OKMUSKOG] Attn: Smm1033@aol.com > I have a question: If someone acquires information and even if it has been > published by a gen soc........is there a problem with it being shared? Hi Chris, Yes go to where it shows Maletha. You should be able to click on her parents names and it will bring up the family, if not their names, click Household on the upper right corner of the sheet. If you have any trouble, let me know. I can print it out and scan to you. First of all Muskogee County Genealogical Society, gave permission for LDS to use the information that WE copyrighted! Here is an excert from LDS.... "Notes and photocopies/lasercopies may be made of the microfilm frames; however the microfilms themselves are copyrighted by the LDS and are subject to such proprietary copyright laws and permissions" Thanks, Alissa MCGS --- catz <catz@kcisp.net> wrote: > If you are transcribing from microfilm, you can post > anywhere you want. > Just because some else also has the same microfilm > roll, does not mean they > have copyright! Hello List, I just wanted to make something clear. Since I have gotten a couple of emails from angry people about the recent published material on this board. Muskogee County Genealogical Society is not in business to make money ON ANYTHING! In fact, this is quite the opposite. We do have publications for sale, at very resonable prices. Some of you indicated to me that you could not afford things such as this. But the reason we create and print these publications is so that we can offer FREE of charge, ALL of these things: Seminars Workshops Monthly Programs Beginners Workshops Newsletters and Mailings Advice and Education Ancestor Fairs ALL FOR FREE! But to have these FREE things we need capital...which does happens to be our publications. Someone from this Society took HOURS and HOURS of their time, usually at the library, to transcribe this information. Then they donated what they compiled to the MCGS for us to make into a publication to sell! Once again, I will be happy to do lookups in indexs for anyone! But this is copyrighted material and cannot be reproduced. Thanks, Alissa Hill MCGS ===== WE ARE....BECAUSE THEY WERE..... I'm so sorry for sending my message to the list. It was meant to go to Joyce personally. I hate it when people do that, and then I do the same thing. Sorry. thank you......the records I was posting was given to me years ago from a lady that supposedly researched these records herself and a friend......... No offense was intended to anyone............
I have a question: If someone acquires information and even if it has been published by a gen soc........is there a problem with it being shared? If that person acquired the information from public records??
I was not aware of a copyright........this came off a microfilm and was told there was no copyright.........I apologize and will post no more........
