I am trying to find family of James G. Mitchell in 1900 I.T. census. His wife was Hattie Melindie, two sons John Herman & Herbert Lee. Hattie M. died 1902 there, and is supposed to be buried near town or place of Stuart or Stewart. Any help appreciated. Mildred Neeley Tatum

I don't know if this will help but have you tried looking in the Dawes Commission Allotment of the Five Civilize Tribes in Oklahoma. I can't remember if the Chickasaw's were one of those tribes but it could be a start. Also, if you have one of your family member's "roll numbers" (this is the way native Americans were identified in the Oklahoma territory if they were on the Dawes roll). If you have the roll number, records in Muskogee or Okmulgee, Ok might be useful. One of your ancestors might have put the roll number in a Bible or another place sacred to them. I found my family member's roll number in my grandmother's bible. For example, it might be B40 or something like that. Good luck.

Nell, 1900 Census Chickasaw Nation T2S R3E E. D. 190 Sheet 8 Notes: Oklahoma and most Western states were surveyed based on a grid system. In Oklahoma where surveying began in 1870, the East-West Basline and the North-South Indian Meridian intersect about 1 mile South of Ft. Arbuckle in what is now Murray County. Each township in this grid is designated by T for Township and R for Range and encompases a 36 square mile area. If you want more detail on how this grid system works let me know. Anyway, your Marleys lived in T2S R3E which puts them about 15 miles North East of Ardmore, Oklahoma in Murray County. Present day Ardmore is in Carter County. This was the Eastern portion of the Chickasaw Nation. If you will look on a present day map of Oklahoma, they were living roughly in the area between the small towns of Dougherty and Nebo North East of present day Ardmore. Sue, I need a map of the Chickasaw Nation area, looks like. E.D. 190 If anyone might scan that area and send it, I will appreciate. Nell
Nell, I will look at the whole page tomorrow. It gives a township and range listing but not a town name. It was probably a farm or rural area. Anyway, I'll see what it is and give you a general area from my township maps. Hi, I don't really know where to start to find information about the Chickasaw Indians. I need to find information about Anna Littletfeather who married Elias Wilson. They had a daughter Margaretta Wilson born April 1, 1813, Margaretta married Benjamin Campbell and they had 9 children. One of their sons, later lived in Shawnee, OK. Any help and information would be appreciated. For the record - I was born in Muskogee, OK Thanks, Leda
Sue, this is exciting - thanks for sending it. Can you tell me which town or county or they were living in there in Indian Territory? How can I find out? It may just be an AREA since it was not a state. Whomever gave the information was way off line on their dates of birth, for sure. Again, this is another lead for us to find Kemp and Susan's death & burial places. Nell > This is just from the Soundex, not the whole census page. Ms. Boyd, You need Cherokee Nation: E.D. 40 sheet 20. If you will give me your grandmother's name and that of her parents if you know them, I'll look them up in the soundex and it will save you hours of searching. Sue

>Mary Ann In response to your question. I knew that my grandmother was born in Indian Territory in 1887, so I rented the 1900 Indian Territory Census, I started with the Cherokee Nation, because she and my grandfather lived in that part of Oklahoma after it became a state in 1907. I did not find her, but it did find some of my other relations in these four films. One being the Benge family that I am trying to trace back to an enumeration district and page number. The next films I rent will be for the Creek Nation. Part of Muskogee County is in what was the Cherokee Nation and part is in what was the Creek Nation. I do not believe that she was listed, but I am not going to give up until I check what I consider the possibilities. I do not believe that my family were Indians, though there are some Mortons on the Guion-Miller Indian Roll. I wish you luck in your search. If I can be of any help please feel free to contact me. Sue Tolbert: as you are assisting Ms. Boyd, if you find my family members in that 1900 IT or OK census, I will appreciate knowing who was listed with their family. Kemp MARLEY, b. 1855, IN Susan (Beck) Marley, wife, b. 1857, IN Thanks! Nell Truitt
Ms. Boyd, The !900 census has a Soundex. There is one for Oklahoma Territory and another one for Indian Territory. You use the soundex (index) by coding the surname. I can look this up for you tomorrow if you will tell me exactly what it is that you want. Sue
