There is a J. C. Farmer 1871 to 1921, but he is buried in the Baptist Mission Cemetery, Adair County. This came from Our People and Where they Rest Book 10 page 3. My father was born in Indian Territory in 1905 in what is now Ft. Gibson. I believe the AR Census listed them but his birth certificate said Indian Territory and indicated he was not a citizen of the U.S. If it had been part of AR, he would have been a citizen. Oklahoma did not become a state until 1907. W. Long Houston, TX
Sue, If I'm remembering right, Muskogee does have a genealogy and historical society. I would go to www.usgenweb.com and then to the county (can't recall it just now) and look at the county page. They have a world of information on those pages! Hope this helps! Can you put me in touch with some one doing cemetery lookups in Muskogee Ok. I cant seem to pull anything up on the city cemeteries. Thanks Sue Benton [email protected]
Johnnie, Here's a couple of the answers I received from the other list when I asked if Ft Gibson was ever in AR and thought you might be interested. I've lived near Ft. Gibson all my life and never knew that. Never too old to learn!! :) Pat Pat, YES, it was. Parts of the Indian Territory were included in Arkansas. I saw a map of the Indian Territory just this last Saturday at the Ardmore library that showed the Arkansas county line stretching across about the Eastern 1/4 part of I.T. It took in about the eastern part of IT by about 75 miles. All of this section except the far NE corner around Miami were included in the county. I was amazed when I saw it and took a good look at it. The time period of this map was about the 1830's or 1840's if I remember correctly. When the line for the boundary of Oklahoma and Arkansas was surveyed, that funny little jog in the boundary was made to keep Ft. Smith in Arkansas. No kidding! Remember that parts of Arkansas was also Indian land after the removals so I would imagine that many years passed before they got all this straightened out. So, the counties in Arkansas as they are now is NOT the way they were during this time period. Counties were added and removed and changed in size, you name it. Dennis Muncrief Murray County CC "Historical Atlas of Oklahoma", pg 21 It appears that Fort Gibson was within Crawford Co AR Territory. What is now McCurtain Co OK and west to near Fort Towson were within "Old" Miller Co AR Territory. From this map, Crawford Co seems to have extended just south of the Kiamichi River and north to the Missouri border. Fort Gibson was on the western most boundary, being barely inside it. This map is undated. "In 1824 an act of Congress fixed the western boundary of AR Terr. on a line forty miles west of the SW corner of MO." "Surveyed by John C Brown, the new AR boundary cut through the lower Kiamichi near the stream's mouth and crossed west of the Three Forks area. The act was a clear violation of the Treaty of Doak's Stand." TLNealy
Sue, thanks for the help to answer my question about Ft. Gibson. Johnnie in CA
Yes, I do thank you for that answer about Ft Gibson, OK. Bless you all for helping me, Johnnie in CA
Yes, Ft. Smith is in Sebastian County now, but parts of Oklahoma was Arkansas, before it became OK, instead of Indian Territory. Johnnie
Sue, I know you must think I'm crazy, just having a senior moment!! LOL I had wondered about that question after I answered it and I had asked on another list if anybody knew. I had gotten some answers and when I got yours, I got mixed up and forgot which list I was answering. Sorry about that!! Anyway now Johnnie knows!! Thanks. According to the Historical Atlas of Oklahoma, an act of Congress in 1824 fixed the western boundary of Arkansas Territory on a line fourty miles west of the southwest corner of Missouri. The new Arkansas boundary cut throught the lower Kiamichi near the stream's mouth and crossed west of the Three Forks area. The Three Forks area is where the Grand, Arkansas and Verdigris Rivers come together just a short distance west of Fort Gibson. This made Ft. Gibson in Crawford County Arkansas until the boundary line was resurveyed in 1825 and found to be inaccruate. Sue
Johnnie, Could they have meant Ft. Smith, AR instead of Ft. Gibson? It's in the same area as Crawford County. I think Fort Smith is in Sebastin County now. Thanks Pat. I have been told that Ft Gibson was once part of Crawford County, Arkansas, while most of Oklahoma was Indian territory. I was in hope someone has a correct answer. Johnnie in CA
Hi Johnnie, I can't help you with the death dates but as far as I know, Ft. Gibson was never in AR? It's about 45 miles from the AR border and a small town east of Muskogee in Muskogee County. It was an actual Army Fort and it is still there today. You might check the Muskogee website too, I know they have a lot of things there. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okmusko Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 04, 2001 6:18 PM Subject: [OKMUSKOG] Ft Gipson Cemetery > I am looking for birth and death dates of John Carroll FARMER sometimes > referred to as J. I am looking for birth and death dates of John Carroll FARMER sometimes referred to as J. C. and his wife Tabitha (Bitha or Siddie, maiden name of SELF) FARMER. They are buried in the Ft. Gipson Cemetery. Where can I get a copy or how can I get a copy of the birth and death dates? Siddie SELF Farmer was my great aunt. One more question, was Ft. Gipson, Oklahoma ever a part of Crawford County, Arkansas? Johnnie in CA
