    1. [OKMURRAY] cemetery cleanup
    2. Dennis Muncrief
    3. Hello All, Now it is the time for all good men & women to come to the aid of the cause. Many of you have done some great things to help the cause of genealogy. Others just sit back like little birds in the nest waiting for the mother bird to fly by and drop a worm in their gaping beak. Which are you? We need some help from you to clean a cemetery in Garvin county. Why am I so concerned about Garvin county, I'm not. I am concerned about a cemetery, period!!! Purdy is about 20 miles NW of Sulphur. The cemetery is terribly overgrown and needs to be cleaned before it is lost forever. Brenda Choate is the CC for Garvin County and she and I have worked on many projects together. Here is a link for one of them: http://www.interment.net/column/feature/stolen/index.htm Those of you who live in this area, we need your help. This is the time for you to get off your duff and help!!! Those of you who don't live here, I wish you did. Here is Brenda's email: *************************** Dennis, Do you know anyone who might want to help with Old Purdy. Betty Barnett and her husband, Tom, want to try to do a cleanup sometime the end of this month or the 1st weekend in November. It will take chainsaws, weedeaters, hoes, rakes, shovels to do this. Don't need mowers. It is in such bad shape that soon it will be gone, lost to us forever just as Robberson already is. We put an ad in the paper to see if we could get some volunteers, but so far, no takers. I know you are busy every Saturday, but we could go on Sunday if we had to. Betty and I are going to try to start an "Adopt a Cemetery" program, to see if we can get some of these cemeteries taken care of, kind of like the "Adopt a Highway" program. Families, business, organizations, etc., could mow a cemetery for the summer. Do you have any suggestions. If we could get a well known organization behind this it might work. BC ******************************************* If you can HELP let me know. We will set up a date that will fit most schedules. Thanks and maybe you will see where I am coming from now. Dennis

    3. Indeed you are right, Eugene Cravatt was in high school in Davis in the forties. He should have been in the graduating class of 1947. I was in the class of 1946. 3. Linda, What a coincidence. I met a Cravatt, a Chickasaw man who lived in Ardmore, while doing the registry of Sandy Baptist Church cemetery. He was mowing the cemetery and asked if I would send him a copy of the registry when I got it done. We had a very nice chat about the cemetery & I took his name and address and when it was finished I mailed him a copy of the registry. He was a very nice man about 70 years of age. The cemetery registry is here: http://www.interment.net/data/us/ok/murray/sandy/sandy.htm There are a lot of Cravatts in this cemetery. I will keep an eye out for them in the Mill Creek Cemetery also. If I remember correctly, Mr. Cravatt told me that his family came from the Nail's Crossing area on Blue River in Johnston County. This conversation occurred about 2 years ago so I can't remember all the facts. Sorry I don't remember his first name either. 3. If you find any Arnett, please let me know. I had a William A. Arnett that left Valliant between 1912 and the 1920 Census. He went to Sulphur. No further info. Had come from Alabama ca 1896-98 to near Red River, TX. Into Valliant. May have known the relatives of Walter A. Arnett. Arrived with either two brothers, or a brother, and Uncle. One is known Uriah Wesley Arnett, other John R. Arnett. The brothers died in different places. ~Walter L. Cullars Researching the work of Casey W. If any of you on the list have family buried there I would be happy to take a photo of the gravestones for you. Many of the folks buried here have very similar names so if you can give me a full name and an approximate birth or death date it would be very helpful. Here is the link to what I have posted so far: http://www.rootsweb.com/~okmurray/cem/New_Mill_Creek_cemetery.htm I have received several queries about this cemetery. It is just inside the Johnston county line. I checked the Johnston county page and saw that it was not canvassed. There is a new CC for the county and she lives in another state so it will probably not get done otherwise. Let me know if you need pictures as I am going a few hours every weekend till it is done. 1. [OKMURRAY] Accidental Death Stats
    2. Dennis Muncrief
    3. a. The number of physicians in the US is 700,000. b. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year is 120,000. c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. (US Dept. of Health & Human Services) Then think about this: a. The number of gun owners in the US is 80,000,000. b. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is 1,500. c. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188. Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners. FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

    2. Possibly a check of the local newspaper during the time might offer up an obituary... i got a lot of my family info from tishomingo (where most lived) from the newspaper (capitol democrat) it was in business then, and still is today... the newspaper owner was very helpful he told me to go to the local funeral home, who did have a dusty old ledger, they had kept even when they changed hands, and it was really helpful. it included even how much they paid! i also got great information from the county clerk's office and found probate info as well as well as read up on a simple divorce in 1921, which cost $2.50! good luck and happy hunting. linda

    3. I ditto that about the newspapers. The best stuff I have gotten is from newspaper archives. OK City (historical society) has all of them. They even have folks that will look up them for you and send them to you for the cost of copying and sending them. But, it is really fun to look through them yourself if you can. You may even be able to get an inter-library loan of the microfilm for the newspaper that you are looking for. -------Original Message------- From: OKMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com Date: Friday, October 11, 2002 17:09:14 To: OKMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OKMURRAY] Death certificates for Murray co Possibly a check of the local newspaper during the time might offer up an obituary... i got a lot of my family info from tishomingo (where most lived) from the newspaper (capitol democrat) it was in business then, and still is today... the newspaper owner was very helpful he told me to go to the local funeral home, who did have a dusty old ledger, they had kept even when they changed hands, and it was really helpful. it included even how much they paid! i also got great information from the county clerk's office and found probate info as well as well as read up on a simple divorce in 1921, which cost $2.50! good luck and happy hunting. linda ==== OKMURRAY Mailing List ==== Host For Murray Co. 3. The book in Sulphur at starts at about 1928 and the book in Davis starts at about 1926. The records are very haphazardly kept until the early 1930's. It takes a lot of time to go through them as there are many dates and months missing. You have to go through them page by page to get much out of them. Generally speaking though the early 1930's on they are pretty good. And also, there are some funeral home books missing because the law did not require the funeral homes to pass the books on to a new funeral home. So a lot of early stuff is simply missing.
