Dennis, I just went to check your site to see that Joseph Franklin York was inserted in the York, I.T., Postoffice space - instead of James York - which is incorrect - as I have sent you proof - or a link to the proof, and I can't seem to find the list of postmasters you had up. Saw a list of postoffices but no postmasters. Also, out of the Oklahoma Place Names book - you will find more proof that Joseph F. York was first postmaster of York. I can copy that off for you, also, if need be. This is important to have correct info, don't you agree? In this case personally important to me, since Joseph York was my paternal grgr grandfather. Please let me know on this. It keeps getting left in the air, it seems! :-) Becky --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). There is no problem as The Chronicles of Oklahoma list an earlier date with a different name. So, J.F. York will work with either whether James, Joseph Jeremiah, Jubal or what ever. It will stay J.F. which is correct. Thanks to Mr. Thomas for sharing the picture of Falls Creek. It brought back some wonderful memories of the early 1950's. Ruth Adams
It was good to see the article about Falls Creek on the Murray County page. My grandmother, Trumie Russell cooked for the Davis camp in 1938 or 39. She stayed in a tent set up on the church's site. I ran across some records of Intruders when I was doing research at the Oklahoma Historical Museuam in Oklahoma City last week. This was found down in the archives room. I found 3 listings of my folks in it where. You might also try there. Unfortunately I live in CA and am unable to look anything up for you there, but I understand that there is someway that some people have volunteered to do work there. I found records dated 1872 and 1879 for my COURTNEY clan. -------Original Message------- From: OKMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, August 21, 2002 03:29:01 PM To: OKMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OKMURRAY] early early census records...... Yes! The various tribes took their own census. The white people who were citizens by marriage or whatever were also included on these rolls. I have also seen a website that had a list of "intruders" taken on a census. These were white people who had needed skills such as doctors, merchants, freighters, etc. that the various Nations needed. Problem is I can't remember where I saw it. But, it is out there somewhere. Try the word "intruder" on GOOGLE.COM. Remember that intruder also included any Indian that was not of the tribe on whose land he resided. Some weeks ago she had a spell of illness and when she had sufficiently recovered, went to the home of her daughter at Lone Wolf, Okla., for a visit. She returned a week or so ago. She was up town Friday morning and while doing her housework was stricken about 2 p.m., lingered in an unconscious state and died about 50 hours later The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the grave in Greenhill cemetery, Rev. A. E. Watford conducting the service. Many of her life-long friends were in attendance. Mrs. Emory Ann Dent was born at Fort Cobb, Indian Territory, in 1859, and spent her entire life in this country. She lived here during the time this country was a wilderness and real civilization was practically unknown. She was a picturesque character, one whose honor and sincerity were never questioned, and who claimed the Golden Rule for her motto. She was twice married--first to Martin Prater, from which union two children are now living, Mrs. Rosa Gregory of Lone Wolf, and Jno. L. Prater of Nutley, N.J. Her second marriage was to Marshall Dent, and three of their children survive, namely: Hardy Dent and Mrs. Artie Mae Smart of Phoneix, Ariz; and Henry Dent of Tucson, Ariz. One sister, Mrs. Peter Harmon of near Hoover, Okla., and one brother, Joll Courtney, who lives in Mexico, survive. Of her children, Mrs. Gregory was the only one able to be present at the funeral. For several yeas his health had gradually failed him, and the past two or three years he had several spells which almost taxed his strength to survive, but his wonderful constitution pulled him through each time until his recent illness. The Presbyterian church was filled with relatives and friends yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock to pay a last tribute to his memory. An appropriate funeral oration was delivered by the pastor, Dr. H. Mr. Brittenburg was born in Nebraska, Aug. 8, 1846, being 77 years old last August. Three years later his father died and his mother moved to Arkansas, then to Ohio and then to Indian Territory where he spent the remainder of his life. He came to Fort Arbuckle in 1861, and lived there until he moved to Davis in 1918. He worked for the government as a blacksmith while the soldiers were at the fort.
