The information about the FHL going online, is confusing and not accurate. People are misunderstanding what the BYU article said and what is meant by "files" in this this story's context. The "files" are reference to AncestralFile -- not the actual files (microfilmed records). There are rumors that the FHL Catalog will be put online -- perhaps this year, but I have not been able to get confirmation of that. Most of the records at the FHL (and thus via the FHCs) are in microform -- film and fiche -- and probably will be that for some time.
