His mother died in a fire when he was a baby, and he was raised in Mellette by his father and aunt, Effie Watkins. He was a great-great nephew of Belle Starr. Memorial service was held at East Tex. Funeral Home in Longview, TX on Dec 17. Survivors include his wife Edith Cross; four children, Teresa Hinnershitz, RN of Oviedo, FL, William Wesley Watkins Jr of Gilmer, TX, James John Watkins of Jefferson, TX and a step-son, Frank Wennberg of Windfield, AL and a cousin, Harold Watkins of Eufaula; seven grandchildren, Charily Riley RN of Pottsville, AR, Felicia Watkins of Atkins, AR, Amber Lilard Hans and Heidi Hunnershitz of Oviedo,FL and Frank J and Erick Wennberg of AL and four great grandchildcren.
