I suspect, as indicated by the enumeration in 1870, that she suffered from some sort of disability. I have heard it to be blindness. According to the IGI Family Group Record I found, they married in Sebastian Co, Arkansas 20 Aug 1874 The IGI Record from Family Search indicates her as Martha Ellen Cotner born 26 Dec 1850. Scott, Arkansas. On the IGI Record it lists no other information is known. Thanks, Kevin

Pernussa's birthplace is listed as Mississippi, is this correct ? I located a Jacob Cotner with a wife named Sarah in 1850 on an index for Scott co. Ark. but I have been unable to verify this as yet. I believe that Ancestry .Com. has the wrong link listed for this one or something. I swear thier Indexes are the worst I've ever seen but the fact that they are listed at all means that they were somewhere in Ark. in 1850 . There were also several Traylor's listed in the same Twp but just as with the Cotner link it wasn't working either and when I looked at the actual census pages they were not listed on them so I believe Ancestry has the wrong county listed, so if we find one of these families we more than likely will find the other one near by. I did notice that two of these Scott Co. Traylor's were also listed as being born in Mississippi and one had a wife by the name of Ruth Ann which caught my eye sense there was a Smalley child on the 1870 census with the name Ruth Ann. I haven't been able to find anything usefull in the 1860 census so I suspect that we have to search for Taylor's instead of Traylor's, a common mistake . I'll let you know if I find anything else . Pat Munroe Board Admin. Thanks Pat! I sure appreciate your assistance. I sit here at my kitchen table between the stacks of papers, printed emails and index listings "gnawing" on possibilities all the time. Being a "newbie" to ancestral research I always appreciate the wisdom of others. It is nice to have "objective" opinions to assist me. Thanks again, Kevin....

    2. A lot of folks left OK after the during the depression and the dust bowl era. My family left during the time of the Dust Bowl. Many settled in Bakersfield, CA and around Phoenix area of AZ. There was a lot more opportunities that could be found at that time in those places. My father and mother came to Bakersfield to take care of his grandma Letha Sumpter Eoff Williams. When she went to the nursing home they worked the fields. They left CA in the 1950s for Oregon and here they stayed. We still have family from both sides of our family tree that live around Bakersfield area. I enjoyed reading about the Indian women. There is so much about history that can be found when researching for our ancestors it amazes me at every turn. Good luck in your research. 3. Pat No, I haven't done any research on Indian customs. But I have searched the Dawes Rolls for my relatives. I don't believe there is really any difference between Indian women, Caucasian women, African-American women or Hispanic women. Or any other race. In the earlier days when a woman of any race had a baby out of wedlock, she gave the baby her maiden name. At least that is the way it happened in McIntosh County and my wife says it happened that way in Texas where she grew up. But I am very interested in any information you may have on Indian women's habits of having children out of wedlock and or any other Indian customs you may have read about.
