    1. [OKMCINTO-L] Vernon Cemetery, Hanna, OK (McIntosh Co.)
    2. Roger Buckmann
    3. Is any one familiar with the Vernon Cemetery near Hanna OK, McIntosh Co.,? If any one is familar with this cemetery and wouldn't mind doing a check for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Looking for: Robert Bridges Benson Bn abt. 1875 in TN It would be in the very old part of the cemetery with a small stone or marker. Use to be near a Buckeye tree back in the late 60's or early 70's. I need any information on him that the stone might provide. Since his side has become a brick wall. Any information someone might have or be able to find for me would be "real special". He was a farmer in the Hanna area until the mid 20's when he died of skin cancer. His wife was Callie Hester Cox, her sisters names were Lillie and Hattie Cox. She also had a brother named Albert Cox. Lillie married a Belvie Ross. Robert and Callie had six children that survived to adulthood. Callie had a daughter by a prior marriage, Sybil Endsley. Robert may have been married before as well. His parents names were William and Martha Benson. Callie's parents were James Cox and Delila Crabtree, she was born abt 1895 somewhere in the IT. Some sources list AR, some OK. Any informaton on these individuals would be greatly appreciated. I have the Crabtree line from Delila's mother on back. Am willing to share any information I am able to gather or already have. Thank you, Dona

    3. Hi Sandy: I will be glad to look at the cemetery for you. I am making a trip out there for Phyllis and one more surely will not hurt! If there is no marker there, would you by chance know which funeral home handled the burial? I will have an answer for you by Saturday morning. Thelma

    2. Thelma, I can not tell you which Funeral Home handled my G-grandfather's funeral and burial. All living relatives that knows about him dieing, did not live near him at the time, so only remembers the date and place. I sure don't want you to go out of you way to do this, I know what a chore it is to travel to another location and search for unknown markers. I think I might have told you or someone else that there are two infant head stones side by side with the last name MURPHY that belong to Grandpa BARNES grand sons. One of the MURPHY babies was named William Arby MURPHY died April 13, 1916 and the other "Baby MURPHY" stillborn died Nov. 24, 1919. If anyone were to stand between the two MURPHY headstones and look to the row or two right behind them they would see a large brown rock with the name Wm. H. BARNES scratched on it. I have a photo of the cemetery showing all three graves but just can't get back there myself to get an exact lot and block number to enable me and family members to buy a headstone. If you could help me find the location of his grave, I surely would appreciate it. Thank you ever so much, Sandy

    3. Sue Ann -- Technically there was no "Indian reservation" in the area. Prior to Oklahoma statehood in November of 1907, what is now McIntosh County was part of the Creek Nation, which had its own laws and government. The Native Americans there did not live on "reservations." There were more whites in Indian Territory than there were Native Americans, but they were suppose to have work permits from the tribes -- the Five Civilized Tribes, that is. You'll find these in the records of the Creek Nation. http://www.rootsweb.com/~itcreek/index.htm I'm not familiar with any birth records available this early. However, you should check the 1900 Indian Territory census for Creek Nation and see if your family was there then -- and if so if they were living in the Creek Nation. See if they are listed as Indian (or mixed blood) on the special "Indian" page of that census. If so, you will then want to check the Dawes Rolls for more information -- assuming they are listed as one of the Five Civilized Tribes. There are a few birth announcements in the local newspapers of the day -- Indian Journal was published at Eufaula and Muskogee in the 1890s and early 1900s (I don't have the dates off the top of my head). You can obtain some great research from the Muskogee Public Library for a small fee. See the Muskogee County Page for the link to the Muskogee Public Library. It has a great collection for the area. http://www.rootsweb.com/~okmuskog/index.htm Some church records _might_ be available that would show an infant baptism, but otherwise you are not likely to find a birth certificate in this time period in this area. Good luck! 3. I have a great uncle who was born on 12 Oct 1904. I've been told he was born on an Indian Reservation in Eufaula, OK. But I see on the OK GenWeb page that Eufaula County wasn't formed until 1907. My question is... where the heck do I go or where do I look for more info? Were birth records kept on reservations? How would I find out which reservation? Also, I've been told that the father of this uncle (or his father) was a Chinese Immigrant who might have worked on railroads. So I assume this would mean that the mother was indian. My question is... was interacial marriages common at the time in the area? Apparently, going by the childrens SS applications, the family migrated ' OK 1904 TX 1906 AR 1908 Was this migration common? Any help appreciated.
