Irma Thorp, 80, Valliant, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at Paris, Texas. She was born June 29, 1924 in Wade, OK, the daughter of Edward Lee Adams and Maud Wiley Adams. Mrs. Thorp was raised in Wade, OK excelling in sports and was an excellent athlete. She had worked as a dispatcher/jailer for the Valliant Police Department for 23 years and had worked for the County Commissioners Office District III for four years as a food stamp distributor. She was of the Pentecostal faith, and had been a member of the Women's Auxiliary of Wright City in years past and had been involved with the Girl Scouts. Mrs. Thorp was actively involved in political and community affairs and was active in the Little Dixie Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Valliant. She married Gene Thorp on June 5, 1943 in Durant, OK and moved to his home in Wright city. They had lived in McCurtain County since that time. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She liked fishing, was a skilled and competitive domino player and was an excellent cook who loved cooking for her family and friends. She was known as "Gurney" to her grandchildren and all their friends. Her home was always open to all of them. Mrs. Thorp was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Jewel Adams, Newell Adams and G. W. Adams. She is survived by her husband, Eugene "Gene" Thorp; one daughter, Sharon Thorp of Valliant; one sister, Lena Thorp of Lebanon, OK; four grandchildren: Buzzy Grayson of Wright City, Saundra Bryant and Lisa Vaught, both of Valliant and Dennis Smith of Ft. Towson; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Funeral services are being held today, Friday, August 20, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at 1st Assembly of God Church in Valliant with Rev. Don and Mrs. June Batchelor, assisted by Rev. Brad Clifton officiating. Interment will follow in Valliant Cemetery with services under the direction of Miller & Miller Funeral Home - Valliant, OK
