Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SaB.2ACI/1553.4.1 Message Board Post: Ten law enforcement officers lost their lives in the Line of Duty in this County: Deputy G.T. Cole (22 Jan 1917) shot and killed by an Army deserter Sheriff A.W. "Bud" Felker (14 Aug 1922) shot from ambush while trying to arrest a double murder suspect Deputy John L. Burns (15 Nov 1927) shot from ambush while destroying a large still Constable William Daniel "B" Wilmoth (8 Aug 1934) Deputy Emery Jasper Whitten (8 Aug 1934) Whitten and Wilmoth were trying to locate and return a runaway juvenile girl, not knowing that the man she was hiding with was an armed bank robbery suspect from Texas. They were both killed while standing at the doorway when the man suddenly opened fire on them when they demanded to see the girl. Constable Fletcher Rodgers (28 Dec 1934) Ambushed and shot by person affiliated with illegal liquor makers/dealers that Fletcher had put out of business Constable Charles W. Adams (5 Sep 1949) Shot while trying to arrest a drunk and disorderly person. (Suspect had a pistol he didn't see) Deputy Clyde Ray Harrison (11 Oct 1963) Shot and killed at the end of a lengthy vehicle pursuit by driver of the pursued vehicle Idabel Reserve Police Officer Ruben Roy Farmer (20 Jan 1980) was shot and killed during a race riot in the City of Idabel Wright City Chief of Police Wendell Ray Rowan (11 Mar 1980) died of a heart attack suffered while he was working onthe scene of a vehicle accident. Side note: There are actually two other officers killed, but hardly "in the line of duty". In a "town not to be named", two officers helped catch a couple of bank robbers. In those days (1910-1920), police salary was very little and often augmented by rewards and fees. It seems that the two argued over who should get the reward, with one killing the other. The suspect was then killed by a Sheriff's posse that went after him. Hope this helps.
