Newton Dudley Caldwell s/o James Douglas Caldwell s/o Andrew Jackson Caldwell of Hempstead and later Howard Co., AR was born January 19, 1841 at Buck Range. Died December 30, 1918 at Goodwater, OK. He is buried at Philadelphia Cemetery at same place. His wife however was Lucy Ann D. Fontaine buried at Buck Range. My question is: How do I find out the names of the JP's in Hempstead and Howard Co.'s back in late 1800's and erly 1900's? I believe I saw an article before my great aunt died that said he was a JP. In order for someone to become a Justice of the Peace I would think they would have to read and write. However, some of his children, my great grandfather was one of them, that could not read or write. I don't understand that logic. Also, another mystery I would like to figure out is why he left Buck Range. It is true he had a child or two over in McCurtain Co., OK which is the Goodwater area. He also had a long pigtail which leads us to believe that there was indian in the family. It was cut off sometime before he was buried. One of my cousins has it in a trunk. Newton's son, Joseph William Caldwell, my great grandfather finally admitted before he died that there was indian in the Caldwell line. His brother Matthew Fontaine Caldwell was listed on the indian rolls. Matthew Fontaine Caldwell was the father to Benny "Blanch" Ivy Caldwell who married Buck Barrow of Bonnie and Clyde fame. Any help is appreciated. Jane Foley

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SaB.2ACI/1643.2 Message Board Post: The cemetery record merely records them as: WALLACE, mother - Marie 1894-1942 and father - Ed 1869-1954. So not much information there. I checked the website proposed by Elaine for some potential background material, which did help in finding him and his wife Marie in the 1920 census. They are shown to be in Bismark (former name for Wright City) in the Sulphur District of McCurtain County, but the name is spelled incorrectly. What is shown on the census record is as follows: Wallas, Edd 48 TN TN/TN Blacksmith Marie (wife) 26 TN TN/TN R.L. (son) 6 AL TN/TN Aside from the different spelling, Ed's age seems off a few years (but that happens a lot in various census records). However, Marie's age is correct, as is the age for Robert Lee (R.L.) ... since he wouldn't be 7 until Nov of that year. Also, the Alabama birth state for Robert is consistant with what is shown on the anscestor file. The anscestor file states that Marie was born in KY, while they census for 1920 says TN ... but that too happens from census report to census report. I back tracked Marie to 1910 and found her family living in Trigg County, KY. Again, much of the information shown in the anscestor record (mother, brothers and sisters, and ages) seems dead on, except for one thing. The family is shown with the mother as head of the house and she is listed as a widow. The anscestor file states that the father didn't die until 1918 and that there were 2 sisters and a brother born after 1910. I'll let you deal with that issue, but here is what is shown for 1910: Trigg County, KY ED 154, page 10A Cayce, Edna Head 38 KY KY/KY Widow Mattie M. (dau) 14 KY KY/KY Roy H. (son) 12 KY KY/KY Annie (dau) 9 KY KY/KY Fannie (dau) 6 KY KY/KY James (son) 4 KY KY/KY Laura (dau) 2 KY KY/KY Note: The anscestor file shows a Mildred (dau) born 3 Mar 1911; Lillian (dau) a twin to Mildred; and William (son) born 1 Apr 1917. I tried to follow some of the children, but don't have enough information to do so. Robert Lee Wallace was found in the SSDI with the following information: 27 Nov 1913 to 8 Jan 1993, SSN: 444-03-1720, last residence also in Wright City, McCurtain County, Oklahoma. There is a J.E. Wallace with the same birth date as shown in the anscestor file who died 22 Mar 2002 in Tyrone, Grant County, New Mexico (SSN: 569-36-9769) but I'm not sure if it is in fact Rovert's brother. At the McCurtain County Library there are micro-fiche files for local newspapers, but the workers for that section of the library haven't been there the same time I have been able to visit ... the files are locked up. They do have some printed (newspaper clippings) obit's on the shelves but I didn't find either Marie or Ed in any of that collection. Hopefully ... until I can get a chance to look into the micro-fiche records ... this information can offer a jump point from which to operate.
