Hi Deborah, You will probably be able to find them on the 1920 census for McCurtain Co., OK. "Lum" is usually the nickname for Columbus. After you find them for sure, and be sure and check the 1910 census also just in case...then you can see where exactly they were living and more information on their family as to where they came from etc and start back that way. On some of the older Arkansas census the Indian census was listed at the end of some of the rolls. Check with a good library that has an assistant that can help you on those if you need Arkansas info. I sent this earlier but somehow it never came through. Thought I would try reposting: ============ I think that this (like many other offenses, hurt feelings, etc) may be a result of a lack communication and possibly the library not taking the time to explain what is going on there in the library. (No...I don't work for them but do visit it often). The Geneology section of the library is run soley by the Genealogical Society itself...not by the librarians. They probably weren't helpful...not out of impoliteness, but because they actually know little about that section. The people who are members of the Gen. Society are (for the most part...) older retired persons who are very particular about their things. Most of them purchased the materials housed in the library either themselves or spent many hours rounding up funds to purchase them. They keep everything locked up because, originally, they tried leaving everything out and many things walked out the door. Since they weren't purchased with public funds, but out of their very limited pockets, they decided to keep them locked when no one was their working. The people that man that section of the library are very sweet. No they aren't always there, but a phone call can determine when they will be there. (I know a person visiting the area wouldn't know this and probably another way would be better.) They work many hours for free...often abandoning their own research to help others, answer letters, email inqueries, ets. They have walked many cemeteries throughout the county in order to create the books they have there for use. Yes, if you want one you can buy them and all the proceeds go to making it a better genealogy section. I am sorry for the black eye we received during the visit. I and those like myself who live here in McCurtain County regret that your visit was unpleasant and unproductive. I hope you give us another chance sometime. If I can be of anyhelp to you, contact me personally and I'll see what I can do.
I personally found your genealogy people to be most helpful. I especially like the fact that my requests were handled over the internet in an expeditious way. Keep up the good work! Larry Lambert
