Posted on: McCurtain County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/McCurtain/1143 Surname: WOOD, REVELLE, DEBURGER, LOVE ------------------------- I think it is probably time to repost this information with updates and see what happens. Thomas Jefferson Wood reported lived in McCurtain County sometime between late 1920-early 1930's, wife Sarah may have been dead by this time. Hello, cousin Barb! Don't get excited, it's just me, but I still can't get an email through to you! (Barb's grandfather is the Eli listed below who we know was also in this county (see Barb's previous posts for Wood and Cline). My Daddy, Melvin Wood, was born in Lindsay, Garvin County,OK to Holson L. Wood b. 1910 Sardis, Pushamataha, OK and Dovie Opal DeBurger Wood, b. Faster, Garvin County, OK. Grandpa's father was Thomas Jefferson Wood, b. 20 Mar 1851 in Ouachita County, AR d. 1937 in Lindsay m. Sarah Katherine Revelle (b. 1878 in MO death date unknown but sometime after 1920 as she is on that census) in 1897 somewhere on the banks of the Red River in TX, probably in Red River County. The couple subsequently moved to Sardis (Tuskahoma), Choctaw Nation which became Pushmataha County, where Thomas owned a grist mill. They are in Sardis for the 1910 and 1920 census, then moved to Broken Bow, McCurtain County at some point, probably. I don't know when Thomas moved to Lindsay or nearby Foster which is where my Grandmother's DeBurger family lived or Purdy. A family photo is from the 1929-1932 timeframe and marked Purdy. At least Holson and daughter Verna were there with him, as they married DeBurger siblings - Grandpa to Dovie Opal in 1934 or 1935 and Verna to George Clifford. I think Beulah and Victor were likely there and possibly George and Eli and Joe Penny Wood was at least visiting (picture spoken of above is of his children). Minnie was married by 1910 to Cephas James, Joe Penny was married with children in 1910, his wife dying that same year and his children living with Thomas Jefferson and Sarah in Sardis (Arthur) and with Minnie and Cephas James (Robert and Emma) near McAlester in Pittsurgh County. Nassie was married and living in Sardis not far from Thomas Jefferson and Sarah in 1910 and I believe the older Thomas was there as well. Nassie and Tom both moved to Broken Bow. My Daddy says that anyone by the last name of Wood in Broken Bow is our kin. This may not hold true now, but it did when Daddy was young and may still be true today. We still have kin in Broken Bow and other parts of McCurtain County. Thomas Jefferson Wood had at least three wives - we think it was actually four - and 21 children. I know there are still DeBurger cousins in Lindsay, Paul's Valley and Wynnewood and I believe there are still Wood cousins there, too. In looking at census records, there were not many Wood families in Garvin County and I believe they may well all be connected. Many of the children went on to live in Phoenix, AZ and in and around ORange County, CA. Some of the children of Thomas Jefferson Wood are: By probable first unknown wife, possibly ?? Penny: Mary Catherine b. Nevada County, AR, 1871 Izadara (Isadore(a)), b. Nevada County, AR 1872 Nanil (Nancy), b. Nevada County, AR 1873 Charlie, b. Nevada County, AR 1874 Joe Penny, b. 1876-1879 (depends on the document, 1879 by 1880 census)Nevada County, AR By Janie Love (probably 2nd wife, but some family records indicate she was mother of above children. What we have found suggests probably not) Nassie b. Nevada County, AR 8 Jan 1888 a second Joe b. Nevada County, AR abt 1886 by unknown wife, probably 3rd Eli, b. AR after 1886. I have date but can't locate George, b. AR, lived in Broken Bow for at least a while Oler (male) b. 1894, AR Minnie Ola (also called Oler) b. 1891?, AR Clarence b. AR, believed to have lived in Broken Bow then TX Thomas b. AR By last wife, Sarah Katherine Revelle Thomas J., b. TX or Indian Territory, 1900, lived in Broken Bow with wife Lela John Lloyd, b., TX or IT, 1905 Vera Ethel, b. IT, 1907 d. CA Holson L., b. 1910, Sardis, OK d. 1982, KY Beulah, b. Sardis, OK 1913, d. CA Verna Agnus b. Sardis, OK 1917 Victor Lee, b. Sardis, OK 1920 Most or all of this group of shildren lived in Broken Bow at some point. The name of the 21st child is unknown. Dates for the first and last groups of children are taken from my Grandfather's Bible and are duplicated in his cousin Emma's Bible and were also given by a cousin in MN. Dates for the third group have been gleaned from newly found cousins and SSDI records. Does this very large family ring any bells with anyone? Would anyone be able to do a death records lookup on Thomas Jefferson Wood? I suspect his parents were Handy C. Wood b. 1804, NC and Nancy ?? who was also possibly a Wood, b. 1816-1820, AL. They had a large family as well, and census records seem to bear out my theory, but I have no hard proof at this time. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Posted on: McCurtain County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/McCurtain/1142 Surname: Wilcher, Sharp, Doss ------------------------- Hello, Peggy: David Dulaney Wilcher was my great grandfather. He lived in Union Co. Miss. before he and his wife Margaret Elizabeth Sharp moved to Garvin, Okla. Garvin, is there in McCurtain County between Idabell and Valliant and also between Millerton and Idabell. Margaret Elizabeth died there and the story goes that her body was sent back to Miss. and buried there; however, I have not been able to find a death cert. (1924) nor a grave. This is somewhat mysterious, although I know that they did not have good death records in those days in that state. In some of the Census records she is listed as Margaret and in others they use her middle name, Elizabeth. David Dulaney Wilcher's grave is in the Garvin community. I can't remember exactly how we found it but I know we asked at a local gas station or store and they knew where the Methodist or was it Baptist cemetery was. I believe the gravestone gives his dates as 1852 - 1940. His daughter Mattie Alta Wilcher was my father's mother. She was born 1881 and died in 1938, Miss. She is buried at Ellistown Cemetery in Union County. She had married Harvey Scott Speck. David's father was John D. Wilcher and John D. was married to Francina Mahala Doss. Sometimes the census lists her as "Frances". His dates are 1807 -185__. Her dates are 1821 - _____. The Wilchers were first in Virginia, then Kentucky, then north Alabama and then Miss. and some to Oklahoma. I don't believe they were ever settled in Tenn. What do you have about him in 1928?? John D. was born in Virginia and Francina was born in Alabama. Mattie Alta had a sister Lilly, who married Louis Brown. They also left Miss. for Okla. and they all lived rather near each other, I surmise. I think that later some of them moved on down into Texas. By the way, my grandfather Scott Harvey Speck, had a bother named Cylde Madison Speck, who had a daughter named Carolyn, who married a Cobb and lived in Tom Ball, Texas. David Dulaney Wilcher, according to my Aunt Fairy, had a zany sense of humor, which my father (Boyce Francis Speck) had also. Someday I will tell you the story of the rocks and pebbles. Well, 'twas nice to meet ya cousin!!

Dear List, My gg-grandmother is Josie Skinner (b. 9-30-1881, Ark; d. 8-6-1953, McCurtain Co., buried in Valliant Cemetery, OK) married to Lum (?) Harris (birth unknown, death abt. 1904, McCurtain Co., OK). I've been unable to locate Mr. Harris' death certificate or burial site. I was told he died about 1904 one night with one of their children dying about twelve hours later. Mr. Harris and child are buried in an "L" shape grave somewhere in McCurtain County. I thought it would have been Valliant Cemetery, but I've had no luck finding them. Josie Skinner and Lum Harris had three other children. Their names are Charlie, Johnny and Daisy. I don't know the name of the child that died. If anyone can help me, I greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much. Sincerely, Deborah Maddox Lexington, South Carolina email: [email protected]

Hello, I don't know anything about these names, but I wonder if someone could clear something up for me. Was the Wheelock Cemetery used exclusively for Native Americans, or were everyone allowed to use it? My grandmother worked at the Academy as a cook for a while, and was buried there with her husband. She said she was Native American, but we have never been able to prove it. Her maiden name was DUNCAN. Many thanks. I hope someone can answer the question as to who was allowed to be buried there. I can't find the message, but I seem to remember a request for information about BLOCKER. I have rediscovered a file sent to me a year or so ago that I though I had lost. It was sent to me in relation to my Phillips-Presley family who lived in the McCurtain OK - Red River TX area at one time. To my surprise it contains the genealogy of Dan Blocker who played Hoss on Bonanza. I have at least one Blocker that married into my Sharp or Pittman family in McCurtain County. It fairly distant and I will have to do some searching to find the one. So if anyone is interested in the family of Dan Blocker, I will be happy to send you the file. It is the descendants of John Pressley who was probably born in France and his son Charles who was born in France and settled in SC. From there they slowly spread across the south into Texas.
