Posted on: McCurtain County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ok/McCurtain/1262 Surname: AXTON ------------------------- Hoyt was not born in Broken Bow, McCurtin county but he was certainly no stranger there. His father coached sports at Broken Bow High. My wife, Mary WINSHIP remembers them well.
My ggrandfather died in Broken Bow in 1934. His name was Ed NEBLE. He is buried in Rock Hill Cemetery. Apparently no death certificate was filed with the state. Can somebody locally tell me what funeral home was in business in Broken Bow in that year that might have handled his arrangements and if they are still there? His wife Nanny died much later, 1964, and JJ Sigler of Antlers handled her burial but I don't think they are in business any longer. Thanks. Rebecca [email protected]
Posted on: McCurtain County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/McCurtain/1261 Surname: Lassiter, Lasiter, Lasater, Lassater, Laster ------------------------- William A. Lassiter was my great great grandfather. His wife was E.J. Lassiter. They are listed in the census (I don't recall which one right now) as living in Machire. On a map from the early 1900s on the Haskell Co. website, it shows Machire as being between Stigler and Whitefield. It doesn't have the county specified, but has several counties listed on the edges of the map, including McCurtain Co. I'd really like to know more about this place. William A. was shown to have been born in North Carolina. There were quite a few children, including my great grandfather, Lovic Peirce Lassiter and "Nanny" Kate Lassiter, who married a Carolan and had a large family. William and his family moved to Machire from Boonsville, AR, Logan County around the turn of the century. I do have land records showing Williams properties in Logan County. I have searched bureau of land manage. records for indian territory and haskell county, but have had absolutely no luck. I would appreciate any and all information you might find about this family and about the Machire community or area. Alicia Peppers [email protected]

I tried to send to your email, but this bounced: Hi, Louann. You might want to find a map of the old Choctaw Nation for the 1880's to see what settlement your kin might have been in. I didn't know untill I started researching Broken Bow (all the Wood folks in the town are my kin), that Broken Bow didn't formally exist until 1911 or so (it was a lumber mill/camp prior to the lumber company buying the land and founding the town according to the McCurtain County history at the Tulsa library). There may have been a lumber camp or railroad camp there in the 1880's. It will save you some heartache and a bunch of headaches, trust me! I felt like I was hitting the wall every time I went looking until I learned that tidbit. The next nearest town of any size would have been Idabel. I'm thinking it existed in the 1880's but not positive on that and maybe not under that name. Can someone out ther answer that for us? I know there are old newspaper accounts from that time and I think they were the Idabel newspaper. Was Williams still there in 1900? If so I can census data from the IT census for that year. Happy time travels! My great great uncle, Ben Ashley Thigpen, was thought to be buried in Three Corners Cemetery located in Idabel, Oklahoma [McCurtain County]. Attempts by others to locate this cemetery has been unsuccessful. Was there ever a cemetery in Idabel, Oklahoma with the name of Three Corners? The name may have been changed. Thanks for any info. Carol, My husband's grandmother was Etta Mae Caler who married Charlie William McIntosh. Her father was John Andrew Caler (Kaler). They were mainly from Arkansas but some of the sibilings lived in Oklahoma. Do you know Cyrus' parents and or siblings? If you don't mind I will pass along your query to a Caler cousin maybe she can answer more questions than I can. Prior to his move he and Peter P. Pitchlynn purchase a group of salves (approximately 50 or more) and trekked to the west in 1833. There is a good possibility that one or more of my ancestors was in this group of slaves. Sam Garland and Peter Pitchlynn located in the far corner of southeast Indian Territory/Janis Indian Territory as it was known at that time which ultimately became McCurtian County Oklahoma. Any assistance provided will be greatly appreciated. Cordially L. M. Moore PS: Willing to share information
