    1. [OKMCCURT] Details of Red River County Murder with McCurtain County Ties
    2. Mary Tarter
    3. > > > > > Can anyone in McCurtain County, OK help me with the information on the following murder? > I am searching for details of an early Red River Co.- Bowie Co. murder. These are the only details I have so far. Mrs. Clarence Smith (maiden name was Mae Hobbs..she was originally from OK) was shot in the back in a dispute over pecans in her front yard. A wagonload of black people were picking up the pecans; Mrs. Smith ordered them to leave. When she turned to go into the house, she was shot in the back by a fourteen-year-old girl in the wagon. According to family legend the girl escaped into OK and was never apprehended. Mrs. Smith left behind two children, Wesley and Luda, ages 12 and 14. After her death the children went to live with relatives in Mc Curtain County, OK and later lived with the Slider Family in Bowie County. TX in the Simms area. Unfortunately, I don't have a date for this incident, but it was somewhere around 1920-1921. Does anyone know of a cemetery where the Hobbs family members are buried? I would appreciate any help in finding more details of this murder.
