They were both killed while standing at the doorway when the man suddenly opened fire on them when they demanded to see the girl. Side note: There are actually two other officers killed, but hardly "in the line of duty". In a "town not to be named", two officers helped catch a couple of bank robbers. In those days (1910-1920), police salary was very little and often augmented by rewards and fees. It seems that the two argued over who should get the reward, with one killing the other. The suspect was then killed by a Sheriff's posse that went after him. Hope this helps.
Hello, Okienarc - Really glad to hear from you. No, I've not been able to get near the info I'm aiming for. I'm so pleased you've taken the time and effort to share this with me. I got hung up right at the beginning. I didn't realize that Tom Graham had served what appears to have been 1 term then later 2 terms. Also, I've been a little confused about Bud Murphy and James E. 'Bud' Murphy. I've been of the opinion that they were the same person, but not certain. I"ve been told that his daughter works at the Idabel Library. I intend to try to contact her someway to verify this. I don't know her name, which doesn't help. Now that I've the dates, I can, hopefully, get news clippings from the old local newspapers to list a few high lights of their terms in office. Since you were Undersheriff, you realize first hand the hardships involved in law enforcement over such a large county. As a child, I knew some of the men in the office and remember some of the 'tall tales' they'd tell. At the time I didn't think much of them, but now, I realize that was an important part of Curtain County's growth. Very interesting. The stories all run together now and I'll need the old news write ups for verification and details. One humorous story that I remember a family friend wanted to borrow my dad's car to take a drivers test. She and the fellow got into the car and she hit the siren button instead of the starter button. She was so flustered after that she didn't do anything right, but the guy passed her anyway. Thanks again for these records. If you put the list together of the fellows hurt or killed in the line of duty, I'd like a copy of that too. Actually, you'd be the better person to put these facts together. I'd intended to compile as much info on each person and period and put it on the McCurtain County web site. I'm not really a 'news writer' but think this is a worthy subject. SO, since you've most of the info right at on hand and if you'd like to do this, BE MY GUEST. I'd love for you to do it. The wives of these officers are to be commended too. I can remember the ainxiety that my mom and stepmother experienced. This is bringing back old memories, some not so good as bed time stories. Hello , I'm in Lakeland, Florida and am researching my wife's THOMAS family lines. I have traced her great, great, Uncle, William Buchanan "Buck" Thomas to Oklahoma. "Uncle Buck" was a Primitive Baptist preacher in the Valliant, Oklahoma area. He married and had four children (2 boys & 2 girls). He also had a stepson. I've learned that one son's name was Samuel Paralee THOMAS. If anyone else is researching this THOMAS line, I'll be glad to share "Uncle Buck's" THOMAS line back through Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Carolina. Thanks for your kindness. Hi Terry, You posting to OKMCCURT-L@rootsweb.com caught my eye and I am also interested in the HUNKAPILLER surname in McCurtain County, OK. The only information I have is regarding the marriage of Mamie Hunkapiller/Hunkapillar to Dewey Claborn. The marriage would have taken place in the 1930s, most likely prior to 1936. As I understand it, the marriage ended in divorce. I do not think there were any children from this marriage. Mr. Claborn is now deceased but in the times I spoke with him about Mamie, he had such fond memories of her. I would love to know more about this lady and if at all possible learn when and exactly where they were married. Mr. Claborn told me that they had lived at Glover. At this time, my home computer is dead (thankfully it was still under warranty) and I am checking messages from work. So, please don't worry if you don't hear from me for a day or two. My new computer is supposed to arrive this coming week and I hope to be back online by next weekend.
