Doane, Life of an Oklahoma Pioneer Couple (I won't type the whole thing as it is lengthy but will copy the pertinant info. There are 6 photos.) Benjamin Grant Doane came to Oklahoma in a covered wagon, settling at Mulhall where he waited until the Cherokee Strip Opening. He had been a native of Harrison County, Kentucky and had come to Jefferson County, Kansas as a young man where he met and married Rebecca Jane Sample. Their first child was born there, and two more were born at Mulhall. The Cherokee Strip opened for settlement, September 16, 1893 and Father was on the starting line. When the final shot was fired, he started riding a grey mule named Betsy. He staked his claim in the part of Woods County that is now Major County, four miles south of the present town of Fairview, Oklahoma. The family lived in the covered wagon and it was close to spring when the sod-house was finished. The folks lived in the sod huse for five years then built a two-room frame house. Father's family had increased to eleven children so he built a two-story frame house. The Doane children's names are: Fred, Richard, Addie Doan Masonhall, Anna Doane Outhier (author of story), Harry, Claude, Katie Doane Bryant, Ray Jessie Doane Williaman, Pearl Doane Coons, and Edith Doane Westergaard. Father died in 1919 at the age of 52 years, and Mother at the age of 52 in 1925. There is a picture on page 407 of the Green Vally School basketball team with Claud & Harry Daone.
