Posted on: Major County, Ok Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/Major/10387 Surname: Ingham ------------------------- David, you mention the possibility of your ancestor going from Michigan to Major County, Oklahoma in 1882 to open a vinegar factory. That would be highly unlikely. The area of Oklahoma that became Major County at statehood in 1907 was part of the Cherokee Outlet in 1882, and there were no white settlers allowed. There were many cowboys, but no farming or related type activities at that time. When the Cherokee Outlet opened for settlement in 1893, your ancestor may have made the RUN or came soon thereafter, but he very likely was in some other location between 1882 and 1893. Have you found him there in the 1900 census? Or have you found him anyplace else in the 1900 census? That's a logical place to search for a lost ancestor of that period.
