    1. [OKMAJOR] I.T. vs O.T.
    2. Linda Hirst
    3. Hello Earl and Jim, Just thought that I would pass along that my gr grandfather died in 1895 in Concord, Woods County, Oklahoma Territory. I obtained his Civil War Pension File for genealogical information. It contained copies of many legal documents because the government didn't want to pay my gr grandmother pension money without proof of marriage. Every document, even personal correspondence, contained the address OT (Oklahoma Territory). It took her attorney 18 months of legal correspondence and finally a trip to IL to take affidavits from 2 witnesses of the ceremony to secure her pension. Sincerely, Linda Hirst

    1. [OKMAJOR] Another note about O.T. vs. I.T, Woods County
    2. J. M. Freed
    3. Briefly, I share two additional references for Woods County (a portion of which became Major County in 1907) being a part of Oklahoma Territory and NOT Indian Territory, from it's inception in 1893. (1) In the publication, "Standard Atlas of Woods County, Oklahoma, 1906", the title of this 1906 publication has no mention of Woods County being a part of Indian Territory. It is also "interesting" that the table of contents lists a map of "Oklahoma" in this 1906 publication, on page 102 and 103. On these pages, there is no mention of Indian Territory, OR Oklahoma Territory, just "Oklahoma". BUT, it definitely is a map prior to statehood since Woods County is square-shaped, and does not identify Major County as a portion of Woods County. However, the eastern side of "Oklahoma" is plainly marked off in sections as "Choctaw Nation", "Osage Nation", "Cherokee Nation", "Creek Nation", etc. A "standard" history of Oklahoma, by Edwin C. McReynolds, "Oklahoma A History of the Sooner State", University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1964, states on page 292, "On May 2, 1890, Congress passed an Organic Act for the Territory of Oklahoma...., lying between Texas and Kansas" and was "taken out" of Indian Territory. No specific eastern boundary is mentioned in the McReynolds book, but the "Historical Atlas of Oklahoma" (by John W. Morris, Charles R. Goins, and Edwin C. McReynolds, U. of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 2nd edition, 1976) on Map 55, shows the boundary between Indian Territory and Oklahoma territory, in 1900, as being one that has as it's eastern boundary (and southern boundary, as part of the line goes west and northwest up the Canadian River) the following counties or Indian areas, starting at the Kansas Border: Osage, Pawnee, Payne, Lincoln, Pottawatomie, Cleveland, Canadian, Wichitas, and the "Kiowa Comanche and Apache" areas. I was surprised to find that several of the Indian areas were actually included in Oklahoma Territory and not Indian Territory. In conclusion, then, these standard references point out that between 1890 and 1907, that portion of the future state of Oklahoma that became Major County in 1907, was in Oklahoma Territory, not Indian Territory. Prior to 1890 it WAS a portion of Indian Territory, but that section of the future state of Oklahoma was not opened for settlement until September 16, 1893, during the RUN, the opening of the Cherokee Strip (or Cherokee Outlet)! Jim in Ohio.

    1. [OKMAJOR] Birth Certificates in Fairview in 1904?
    2. J. M. Freed
    3. Earl, I would be skeptical about an actual birth certificate written in Fairview in 1904! My parents were born about that same time about 15-20 miles east of Fairview, and there were no birth certificates in that area. (Alva was the county seat, and who would go to the trouble of traveling to Alva just to record something as common as the birth of a baby!) The Oklahoma Department of Health has birth and death records only from 1908 (according to the Handy Book for Genealogists.) I would guess, unless there is an actual proof of the date at which the certificate was written, that your dad's certificate is a "delayed birth certificate". That is, sometime later, perhaps in the 30's, 40's, or even the 50's (or later) when the Social Security Administration required evidence of the birth year, my dad had to have some relatives swear that my dad was actually born (on a specific date). He and his relatives had a chuckle about that, because they, of course, had no records or specific memories of dates themselves. If the above was the case, then a very common misconception was then (in the '40's and '50's) , and continues today, that Woods County (in the 1890's and prior to statehood in 1907) was a part of Indian Territory. I do, however, have several records from my great grandfather who arrived in what became eastern Major County, near Ames about 1895, that he always wrote for his address, O.T. (i.e., Oklahoma Territory). Earl, if you actually have an "original" birth certificate from 1904 that states Indian Territory, I would appreciate your confirming that information again. Jim in Ohio. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Kerseyjr@aol.com> To: <OKMAJOR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2001 6:49 PM Subject: Re: [OKMAJOR] Major County, OK 1880's census; Oklahoma Territory > In regard to the Indian Teritory statement: Better get the state records > corrected as my father was born in Fairvier in 1904 and his birth certificate > states that it was in Indian Territory. > Earl Kersey Jr. > kerseyjr@aol.com

    3. Lilac, Concerning your search for the parents of Clara M. Woods, born in Garber, November 21, 1899: If you are looking for the 1900 census, then Garber is now and was in 1899 located in Garfield County. If you are "simply" looking for Clara Malissa Woods' parents, then her obituary should have her parents' names, and probably easier to find is her death certificate, assuming that Oklahoma does not restrict that late of death certificates to next of kin. Suggest three routes, (1) go to Oklahoma on the usgenweb page: http://www.usgenweb.com and look for information about obtaining death certificates in Oklahoma. 2. Continue on the usgenweb site and check out Major County records. 3. Since you know Clara's death date, you may know where she is buried. If died and/or buried in the Fairview area of Major County, perhaps the Fairview Republican would have published an obituary, and perhaps, with the specific date given, somebody at the Fairview Republican newspaper could check for an obituary for you. FLASH! It always pays to look at one's own sources first. I just checked the Major County History book, "Gloss Mountain Country, a History of Major County", produced by Major County Historical Society, 1977, on pages 355-356 on the Ireland (Ira) and Nancy Woods family, a family story submitted by Frances Crawford Vickers. Briefly, Ireland B. Woods was born August 12, 1870, in Gibson County, Indiana. (More info on his ancestry is provided). His wife, Nancy Draper was born Dec. 19, 1879, Boon County, Iowa. (More info on her ancestry is provided). They were married January 7, 1894 (no information as to location), "and homesteaded near Garber, Okla." .. Clara was born November 21, 1899". From another paragraph it appears that this Woods family moved to Caddo County, Oklahoma, about 1900 or 1901, where Clara married Earl Crawford in 1921 (no indication of the County, but apparently Caddo County, Oklahoma). Ira died March 27, 1923... and sometime later his wife and remaining family moved to Fairview (Major County). A picture is provided with the article that shows, "Nancy Woods Page, Clara Crawford, Francs and Sandra Vickers with Harley and Craig Vickers, 1950". Email me personally if you wish more information from this article. (Wish all searches would be this easy...., but note that all the information given is above is,at best, tertiary source information. It's best to go to the original records.) Hope this helps. Best Wishes. 1. [OKMAJOR] Major County, OK 1880's census; Oklahoma Territory
    2. J. M. Freed
    3. Lilac, In terms of your request for census records for Major County, Oklahoma, in the 1880's, a short history of that portion of the present state of Oklahoma is relevant here: Major County was not in existence until 1907, so there are NO Censuses for Major County in the 1800's. You can find, however, the 1900 census for Woods County, Oklahoma Territory (NOTE: NOT Indian Territory, but Oklahoma Territory), which included all of what is present Major and Alfalfa Counties and a portion of present day Woods County. [A major portion (western) of what is present day Woods County was in Woodward County in 1900.] For the 1900 census of Woods County, Oklahoma Territory (containing all of present day Major County) and for the 1920 census of Major County, Oklahoma, you might try the census records (no index available online that I know of) at: www.ancestry.com There is a hefty charge for access to these census records, but we have found the investment very worthwhile. The 1910 census for Major County is also available at various reference libraries. By the way, another comment relevant to the above. I have seen various obituaries within the past 30 years of individuals who were born prior to statehood and with their place of birth listed at a location in the western part of Oklahoma (such as in Fairview) as Indian Territory. That is in error. The western portion of what became the State of Oklahoma in 1907 was designated as Oklahoma Territory about 1889 or 1890, whereas the eastern portion of what became the State of Oklahoma in 1907, remained as Indian Territory. Consequently, no "white" settler born in the Cherokee Strip after the land run of September 16, 1893, was born in Indian Territory. [Reference: Morris, John W., Charles R. Goins, and Edwin C. Dear List Members: I just want to take a moment to remind you that you should never give information on living persons in your messages without their permission or the permission of their parents if they are children. The most important reason for this is the right to privacy. You also need to remember that anything you post goes into the archives of that list and stays there. It cannot be removed but it can be copied and added to any ones site out there in the world of the internet. This may not seem real important, but I promise it will become so when you are surfing the web one day and come across a site with your children's names, grandchildren's names, where they live and how old they are. If someone posts a message to the list that should not have been posted, please just delete it. Know that I am taking care of the problem. If you post your unhappiness, then you just continue on the problem. I know it is hard when your heart has been offended, but for my sake, and the sake of the list, please just delete it. Rootsweb has a wonderful Spam Detective and it stops most of it. You should see what comes across my screen. I have to look at each of them to make sure that what was stopped was truly spam. Once in a while, one slips by though and if this happens, just delete it and go on with what we all love, genealogical research. 2. If you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line it might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 4. The wonderful relationship that develops between list members is also one of a Mailing Lists Problems. I encourage you to respond to the entire list with genealogical responses, you never know who your response will help. In the same thought I would like to ask you to not respond to the entire list with personal responses. Such as the first message from a members says Says "Happy Birthday John" and then John says "Thank you" and then about 60 of our members also send "Happy Birthday John". This is what I mean by personal messages. Just keep in mind anything is ok to be posted as long as it has to do with the subject of the list. If you have a doubt ask me. kathleenburnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and yourwillingness to help make this list the success it is. 3. Dear List Members, I belong to many mailing list besides the ones I am List Mom for. I had a real eye opener this weekend on several of them and it made me appreciate each of you more than you will ever know. I saw members putting each other down, demeaning one another, screaming at each other if one could scream via an e-mail. I saw new members leave because they were made to feel foolish only because they did not know the rules of the list. I feel blessed to be the List Mom of your list and I thank you with all of my heart for the manner in which you handle yourselves on it and for the way you treat each other. Because of each of you I am able to take care of as many lists and I do - and love each and every moment of it. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
