The older Polk's directories have a wealth of information included by the name list. ex.. occupation, rent or own, spouse name. Also they have a street listing in the books. The newer city directory lack this type of information. Depending on where you live, you might have access to micro-film for the census. Be sure to check for Index Census, and the regular Federal census. In 1930 the government made soundex cards which WPA workers did for the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 Federal Census. The Index Census contains these cards, which helps when searching the Federal Census. The surname were converted to a code. Ex.... Hembree = H516 Use the code for Index Census for any of the following census, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 for each state. The soundex card will give you addition information on the location of the indivual on the Federal Census. Ex... indivual name, members of the household, state, county, township, household number, family number [BUT there could still be an error, so check the Federal Census] One more item these are done on Head member's name. good luck
