There are conflicting stories about selection of the name Marietta. One version is that the name came from the name Marie Etta, wife of Jerry Washington, a Territory rancher on whose land the townsite was located. The version in the Oklahoma Place Names book is that it was named for Marietta, Pennsylvania as Ardmore and other stations on the new Santa Fe line were named by railroad officials for towns in their home state.
