Tom Broom officiating. Mrs. Marshall was born January 21, 1907, in Marfa and died November 6, 1993, in the Love County Health Center, Marietta. She was the youngest child of the pioneer ranching family of Frank A. and Fannie Chisholm Mitchell. She received her degree in music from Southern Methodist University and later attended Westminister Choir School in Ithica, New York. An accomplished musician who taught voice, violin, piano and music theory, she was also a sought after soloist. She taught music at Sul Ross State University and later was director of church choirs in El Paso, Alpine, Marfa, Albuquerque and Dallas. For several years she was the director of music at Bloys camp meeting. It has been said this lady was a precious gift of West Texas to many. She was often referred to as "the song bird of the Southwest" because of her beautiful and alluring voice. In addition, she was an inspiration to her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many cousins, and a friend to all. Mrs. Marshall had been a resident of Durant for six years before moving to Marietta one month ago. She is survived by two sons, John M. Marshall of Grapevine, Texas, and Jim Marshall and his wife, Judy of Marietta; and five grandchildren, Greg, Robert, Erin, Lauren and John Marshall. Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by her husband, J.H. Marshall in 1978. Interment was in the Marfa Cemetery with the Anderson-Kennedy Funeral Home in charge of the local arrangements.
