Officiating was Rev. Golden Shook, minister of the First United Methodist Church, and a eulogy was given by V.B. Robertson. Born April 11, 1907, in Marietta, he was the son of William Dewitt and Nora Ellen Davis Mayes. Mr. Mayes died August 17, 1992, in the Gainesville Memorial Hospital, Gainesville, Texas, at the age of 85. A resident of Love County all of his life, he was a retired rancher. Mr. Mayes married Sythia Blackman December 24, 1929, in Marietta. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sythia Mayes of the home in Marietta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Jack and Lois Mayes of Ardmore and John and Bonnie Mayes of Marietta; five daughters and sons-in-law, Marie Curry of Woodward, Joyce and Joe Allgood of Ardmore, Margaret and Bill Hammer of Round Rock, Texas, and Alyne and Joe Kirk and Linda and Jerry Kerr of Marietta; a brother, Son Mayes of Marietta; two sisters, Lela Mayes of Marietta and Irene Dowdy of Midwest City; 23 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Mr. Mayes was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Mayes, Orville Mayes, and Olie Mayes; three sisters, Myrtle McCue, Jessie Hill, and Alma Wilson; and a son-in-law, Carl Curry. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery under the direction of the Anderson-Kennedy Funeral Home. Grandsons served as casket bearers. Source: Marietta Monitor, Love County, August 21, 1992, page 4.
